“Don’t you feel lazy when you have to sleep most of the day or rest?”
It is so not okay to say this to anyone. Ever.
I do not need the reminder of how crippling RA is.
This is not for fun and games or to play hooky from work (Though, I have been lucky in I have not missed work because of it).
Sometimes it is the only way to take down a flare!
If I cannot get out of bed, brush my hair, climb the stairs, and I am already on the highest, safest dose of medication, how else do you expect me to take down a flare?
Why is this different from when you are sick with the flu?
It’s not.
I think people are incredulous because sleeping all day it is for “sh*ts and giggles” and laziness. To them, it is a choice.
Not for me.
For me, it is a necessity.
I cannot think of anything less fun than feeling more dwarfed by my auto-immune on the days I am chained to my bed.
When I bow out of plans I only say I am not feeling well. I no longer mention anything about rest.
People cannot imagine that it takes this much sleep to recover from a flare, so the first thing most people think is I am faking or trying to get out of something.
No.
I need to do this to be functional.
And no.
I am not lazy.
Hi, my name is Monica and I have RA. (And in order to manage it, I take “sleep” days.)
Hi, found your blog through another nail art blog. You have my utmost sympathy in dealing with this difficult disease. Although I do not have RA -did have a RA scare recently but it turned out to be menopausal stuff oh joy- I have a bad migraine condition 10 to 15 days a month bad. All those dumb sh*t comments? Yeah, I have heard all of them as well. On the bright side I am a laquerhead too, had gelnails done about a month ago and I am teaching myself nailart now. Even though all those dumb sh*t folks do not understand why a 51 year old woman would want to. I mean, one shade of nice pink is enough right? Happy nails, Katja (The Netherlands)

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I hope you find relief for your health! Headaches are the worst and I feel for you as well!
I hope nail art brings you as much joy as it does me. Even when I may not be able to paint during a flare, it brightens my spirits when I can!

Nailart is a constant source of enjoyment, I have a stash of about 50 colours -mostly Essie- but I am broadening my horizon with other good brands like China Glaze and Zoya. It is difficult however to get ahold of them in Holland. Long live the Internet! Now to get my dots evenly applied….

Nice!! If you like Essie you will definitely love China Glaze and Zoya…I myself like China Glaze the most out of that list. Though, for nail art, I find Zoya better…
Dotticures still give me a lot of trouble…I just use different sizes and weird spacing so I don’t have to worry!! 😀

Yes, that’s my solution as well…
Tried my hand at roses for Valentine’s Day but those are really tricky. They looked like flowers but that was all. So I am doing lazy nailart at the moment, different colors on different nails and some glitter topper, hey presto ‘nailart’. Well for Holland anyway :).

Glitters are wonderful and totally fuss-free (except taking them off 😉 )
I really want to try the one-stroke flowers technique, it looks so pretty!
