Flashback Friday: That Time Affie Trotted Off

Affie, dogs, flashback friday, pets

I grew it up in a gorgeous wooded neighborhood. It was a protected area where homeowners could only expand their homes vertically and not horizontally so they wouldn’t disturb the forest. Because of this, the houses were generally small with large, untouched yards wrapped around them. Fun fact: One was built by Andrew Lloyd Wright and remained in his family!

I know it sounds like I grew up in a quiet rural environment but actually I lived in the suburbs of Washington DC! The city and it’s neighboring counties took their environment seriously.

DSCF1982

The surrounding streets connected through loops and general roundabouts with multiple outlets to the “main road”. This kind of made us one big happy neighboorhood, even if we didn’t know everyone who lived in the gorgeous 50 and 60 style houses.

Mine was not small but it was one story with a basement. It looked it, though, because of the vast garden. I was lucky that we had such an expansive yard. I had a lot of room to play and the dogs had plenty of space to run.

When we got Affie (our first dog) we decided to take advantage of this great big space and put in an invisible fence. I know it is a controversial topic but we thought it was a great idea because the dog had unblocked access to the entire property.

It was perfect for the Affie and Saachi (our second dog). They ran around all day (hours upon hours) as if they were farm animals and especially loved to trot next to other people walking their pets.

A in her Pillow Hat - 2007

In retrospect, this is probably why our pets are so aloof and self reliant. They preferred the outdoors and were not interested in playing fetch or Frisbee.

We liked to keep Affie’s fur short. It matted easily and I couldn’t keep up with the grooming. But, during late Fall, early winter we grew her hair out so she could stay outside and not freeze her little doggie butt.

The problem with this, we found out, was she would disregard her fence collar. We didn’t keep the shock too high but it was high enough that we thought she could feel it through inches of fur. Even now, we’re not convinced that she didn’t feel it.

Affie Chain - 2006

One weekday while I was at school a neighbor from three “neighborhoods” away rang our doorbell and handed Affie over to my father.

“We found her marching along the road!” she explained. My father was flabbergasted. He didn’t know the woman but thankfully she recognized Affie from when she walked her own dogs.

I don’t know how this lady caught this nutty dog but I have the upmost respect for her. Affie never came when she was called and played chase with anyone who looked at her.

Now, this is probably a good time to mention we checked on the dogs when they were outside but since they had full use of the property (front and back of the house) we never worried too much if we couldn’t see them. They explored every inch of the yard (and remember I mentioned it was very wooded) so we just assumed they were in some cranny inaccessible to us.

The woman was kind enough to remove Affie’s collar and it was still buzzing when she handed it over. She laughed “I can’t believe she didn’t feel it!”

DSCF1989

We couldn’t believe it either.

After that, we checked on Affie more frequently and I did catch her making a break for freedom a couple of times. I think she chose to ignore the zap to continue her carefree exploratory existence outside of her usual four corners.

Flashback Friday – The More Crooked the Teeth, the More Active the Dog…

flashback friday, Saachi

Like most puppies, Saachi gnawed and chewed as her adult teeth grew. Like most puppies, her mouth needed a lot of stimulation. Like a lot of puppies, Saachi destroyed furniture with her teething. Like a fair amount of puppies, Saachi chewed us out of house and home. Literally but not as dramatically.

Everything 001-2

We should have found more ways to re-direct Saachi’s teething. She was extremely aggressive and toys were out of the question with other pets around. She had a bad stomach so bones and sticks were too. What did that leave us with?

Chairs.

Her favorite was a blue one that was part of a set of in our guest living room. The space we entertained friends, extended family,…clients…

But, sitting in the middle of the room was this one chair, with one leg missing. A leg that was fully chewed off one lovely evening during an even lovelier dinner party. Saachi and Affie both messed around nuzzling our guests, receiving lots of coos and “aww! how cute!”s. We settled into the seats and began the typical rounds of conversation.

Sometime during the evening, my father suddenly tipped in the chair. Saachi, his pride and joy, lay at his feet and cleanly gnawed off the front right leg of his chair!

A normal family would have trashed the seats but I guess we weren’t normal because instead we centered the chair like a badge of pride (after all, Saachi was the child my father always wanted) and balanced it with “smart” books. You know, the long, difficult monologues or transcripts everyone says they’ve read but don’t actually understand…

At the end of the day, it wasn’t Saachi’s fault, it was ours but as a result Saachi had the most lopsided row of adult teeth ever. And she, like us, flaunted them with pride!

Flashback Friday: A Whole New Chew Toy

flashback friday, pets

I have not done a Flashback Friday post in ages! How is this possible? I love talking about my pets and most times, in person, nobody wants to hear it! So…I take to the internet! I am going to re-start these posts because they are fun to write and reminisce about!

We adopted Affie at 8 months. She came to us set in her obstinate, pig-headed, Coton ways and it took months and months to train her. I nearly lost my mind. However, looking back on that time I realize she was actually very well-behaved. Sure, she would sneak off and poop or pee all over the house but she never got into anything she was not supposed to, or wrecked other havoc on the house.

We adopted Saachi at 2 months. Of course, by the time she was 2.5 months she was thoroughly spoiled. She, on the other hand, was house and command trained in weeks. Just like a cat! On the flip side, though, when she could she destroyed anything she got her paws on.

I should probably interject at this point, whenever I left the house, I used all the tricks. I left squeaky toys out, I left hard rubber toys out, I left the lights on, I left the TV and radio on. She still showed her displeasure at being unsupervised. One evening, despite my attempts at making her feel less alone, I went out to dinner with friends. I returned home to find Saachi did some gardening. She re-potted every single plant to the white carpet. Seriously, dog? Really…I mean…really??

However, this is next to nothing to her piece de resistance: the chair leg.

I should probably say this did not happen over one evening…It took her weeks of stealthy chewing to completely eliminate a chair leg. We did not watch Saachi as carefully as we did Affie, because she was house-broken and slightly better-behaved….except, of course, when she got a tic in her head to complete some sort of project…

In our living room, we had a matching set of blue chairs. It was the “nice” living room which we used to entertain guests. However, during the first few months after adopting Saachi we rarely invited people over. Saachi was crazy aggressive to people and animals alike.

One day we noticed one of the chairs look a little skewed and when we took a closer look we noticed one of the legs was missing! Saachi had chewed and probably swallowed a whole chair leg!

Now, my father and I have strange attachments to our inanimate objects and could not bring ourselves to trash the chairs so instead, we sanded the left-over stump and placed books underneath to prop the chair up! Let me tell you, it was a conversation starter!

Smiling

Look at those crooked teeth!

Saachi’s adult teeth were fairly new so the constant wood chewing resulted in major cosmetic changes on her lower mandible!

Flashback Friday: Toy Stealer

flashback friday, pets

When I went to the beach I played the boardwalk games. I never won anything until five or six summers ago. I do not remember the game but I won a bright neon orange monkey.

This monkey resided in Affie’s bed. Some times we played fetch but usually Affie just slept with it. I was ok with that. The otherwise trophy got some use and I was not particularly worried since Affie was very careful with her toys.

DSCF5725

Three days ago, Saachi went on a toy search and grabbed any and every stuffed toy she could find. I did not realize she grabbed the monkey until she was up the stairs.

I tried everything to get the monkey back but because it was “new” Saachi guarded it with her life. She was very smart. She knew I could grab the toy at the front part of her mouth (when she held multiple toys) so she held the monkey at the back of her mouth.

Fine, I said, I would grab the stuffed animal later, maybe when Saachi was outside or napping.

DSCF1575

The next day I grabbed the toy but it was too late. My big brute of a Bullmastiff tore the monkey’s head off! Of all the things she could do, she ripped its head off.

As with all toys, this one is now Saachi’s and like clockwork she has already lost interest in it.

The Furry Friends Tag

flashback friday, furry friends tag, pets

Instead of a Flashback Friday post I decided on the Furry Friends Tag.

I recently subscribed to Claire Marshall’s Youtube channel “Hey Claire”. I think I have watched almost all of her videos. Apart from her addictive vlogs, my favorite video has to be the furry friends tag (linked here). Bruce Lee is so cute! He makes frequent appearances in Claire’s videos and always adds to them instead of retracts!

(Answers are in order of oldest to youngest. This so happens to be the same order in which we adopted them!)

Color-coded for easier viewing.

Marmalade, Sunsilk, Affie, Saachi

IMG1340588248157_fotor

1. What are your pets name?

Marmalade, Sunsilk, Affie, and Saachi.

2. What kind of pets are they and what breed?

Marmalade and Sunsilk are felines. Affie and Saachi are canines.

Marmalade is a domestic shorthair tabby. This is equivalent to the mutt in dogs but has long since become its own breed.

Sunsilk is a mutt. She is some strange mix. We rescued her so we are unsure but we believe she is at least half Abyssinian because her back legs are taller than her front ones. She also has very prominent tortoiseshell markings.

Affie is a Coton de Tulear. This breed has recently become very popular in the USA over the last five years because they do not shed and are hypo-allergenic. Cotons resemble the Bichon Frise but their fur is more cotton like.

Saachi is a Bullmastiff. She is one of the prettiest Bullmastiffs I have ever seen. Mastiffs generally have short snouts similar to the bulldog or pug. Saachi’s muzzle is quite elongated and she looks a lot more proportionate than others in her breed.

3. How long have you had your pet friend?

Marmalade: 11 years

Sunsilk: 10 years

Affie: 7 years

Saachi: 7 years

Affie and Saachi Baby

4. How did you get your pet?

We changed everyone’s names when we adopted them. From Samantha to Marmalade, Cowbird to Sunsilk, Aphrodite to Affie, and Lottie to Saachi.

We adopted Marmalade from the animal hospital I work at, one week after my mother passed away. This memory will always stay with me. My father was on the phone with my future boss, the head veterinarian at the clinic, and he mentioned he thought I was ready to take care of my own pet. We were unable to keep a dog or cat while my mother was alive because my father traveled for work, my mother had Lupus and I was too young to take full responsibility for a pet. The doctor  told us one of the technicians moved but was unable to take her one-year-old cat, who was now up for adoption.

The day we brought her home was the longest in my existence. We ran errands all day and we planned to visit her in the evening. I was so excited every minute felt like an hour. My dad told me “you have one day to name her so make it good!” Of course, under pressure, I could not think of anything.

Marmalade was so vocal. She chatted, she was social, sweet, and active. I instantly fell in love with her. So did everyone else in my family.

“What will you name her?”

“Marmalade?”

Just as my father asked me that question Marmalade rolled over on her stomach and I saw the little patch of orange. It came to me in seconds but the name fit.

 This was the first snowball.

One year after we adopted Marmalade I said “we should adopt another cat, Marmalade needs a friend.” Marmalade was an alpha-female so we agreed on kitten, as young as possible.

We decided to rescue from the Humane Society. The kittens at the shelter were certainly cute but we felt no connection to any of them. As we were leaving we noticed a large cage next to the door. There were six kittens curled up in a small bed. One caught our eye because of her very unusual markings.

She sat peacefully in my father’s lap and blinked at him. She had a little kitty cold and was half asleep. Every time she breathed a little mucus bubble came out of her nose. She was gross but totally adorable. (FYI: She never got less gross, she drools, snores, and her nose still drips)

We fell in love…again.

That snowball is gaining speed…and mass.

Adopting Affie was the most sponteaneous thing we ever did. A couple of years after we adopted Sunsilk my father decided he wanted a dog.

As he explained “I grew up with dogs and I want one now!” Alright.

But, I had pet allergies so the dog had to hypo-allergenic. My father took to the internet. He typed in hypoallergenic dog breeds and the first to pop up were the Coton de Tulears and a breeder two hours away. The following day we drove out to meet Affie and we fell in love. That same day we walked away with a new puppy.

Her mother was an award-winning show dog. Affie, however, was a runt and her markings were not up to breed standards, and, as is the usual case with breeders, not well taken care of and extremely malnourished. Within two/three weeks of adopting her, she had gained five pounds!

The snowball gained so much mass it barreled us over.

Six or seven months after we adopted Affie, Dad felt sad. He traveled for work and the cats and dog attached themselves to me. He wanted a dog for himself. I agreed, again, but only if it was a giant breed. Specifically, a Great Dane.

Dad disagreed. He thought they were too common. …I have only seen two Great Danes where I live, EVER. Anyways!

What was my second choice? A mastiff. My father researched and researched and one day started yelling for me from his office. He excitedly showed me pictures of this silly looking Bullmastiff puppy for adoption in Kentucky.

“What do you think??” “She’s cute…kind of chubby…but really cute..” “Good, because I already emailed the owners”. My father was so thrilled. He emailed the pictures to EVERYONE we knew, even before she came to us. Go figure, Saachi is my father’s dog through and through.

Saachi lived on a farm so when she came to us she had tapeworms, some other stomach worms, and giardia. It took months to get rid of them and consequentially she is small for her breed.

5. How old is your pet? (mm/yy)

Marmalade: 12 years old (07/02)

Sunsilk: 11 years old (04/20)

Affie: 8 years old (07/13)

Saachi: 7 years old (08/30)

DSCF2320

6. What are some quirky things about your pets personality?

Marmalade is a maternal cat. She takes care of me. She does not leave my side when I am ill or in pain. When we nap together and someone tries to wake me up she screams and slaps them.

Sunsilk never stops purring. She purrs in her sleep, she purrs when she eats, she purrs when she is scared or in pain.

Affie is a Nalgene bottle. She is indestructable. How many times has Saachi trampled her when playing and pushed her down the stairs? Nothing happens to her. Affie is completely unphased. The only time she ever “broke” was after Saachi attacked her but given she should have died…she still fits that description.

Saachi thinks she is a cat. She kneads before she lays down. She also purrs. It is a very low-tone growl on the exhale. It is her attempt to copy Marmalade.

7. What does your relationship with your pet mean to you?

My pets mean the world to me. My father traveled a lot for work so I spent a lot of time with “my pack”. They were always there for me no matter what, even when people were not. A pet’s love is unfailing and unwavering. They always forgive. We can learn a lot from our furry friends.

When I am home alone, Marmalade, Sunsilk and Affie form a “protective” barrier between me and the door. My family jokes they would not want to be the person trying to harm to me if Marmalade is there. She would mess that person up. She will always hold a special place in my heart. She was my first pet. No animal can replace her.

Our current relationship consists of me wanting to play with them and them giving me the stink-eye. When they want to be left alone they are not having it! When I am with my pets, I am about five-years-old.

DSCF8846

“Play with me!” “NO!”

8. What are some of your favorite past times with your pet?

None. HAH. No, that is a joke. Well, not really. We do not really do anything together except take naps. You should see us, we sleep like a pile of ferrets right on top of each other. It is beyond comical.

Seriously though, when the weather is nice I put everyone’s leashes on (cats included) and tie them to the rail on our front stoop. We enjoy the sun and being outdoors.

DSCF6156
9. What are nicknames that you call your pet?

Marmalade: Parmpi, Fat Cat

Sunsilk: Kitty, Babes

Affie: Aff-Taff, Little Girl, Chubbs

Saachi: No! (Someone is always yelling at her…poor thing, she doesn’t get away with anything because she is so big!), Ugly (I feel kind of bad about this. When she was growing up her head was too big for her body. I called her “Ugly” as a joke but the nickname stuck…Everyone calls her that and she responds to it!)

Marmalade and Sunsilk

flashback friday, pets

After the dog fight, we fed the dogs separately. Two humans stayed on standby and watched over feeding time, just in case.

…Two humans and a cat.

For three days after the attack, Sunsilk (two years older than Affie) sat by her food bowl and watched over her. Appeared when we put the bowl down, stayed while Affie ate and sat by the door when we walked her in the yard.

We always knew Sunsilk and Affie were close as they both spend their time with me but we never knew they would “jump in front of a train for each other”.
