February Favorites, Part One (VERY word-heavy)

06 Thursday Mar 2014

Bear with me since I went on a massive “spend all my money” spree during the long days of being Snowed In. I loved most of what I bought!

There were a lot of favorites so I decided to split them into two posts. The first part contains skincare and beauty and the second continues with haircare and miscellaneous!

Now, on to the show!

Chanel’s Lotion Douceur Gentle Hydrating Toner, Balance + Anti-Pollution

(USD $45.00 for 6.8 fl.oz)

Feb-Empties

I bought this in November as my Christmas present to myself. It was light and smelled amazing. The floral scent did not linger once it dried on my face. When I tested it at the Chanel counter I was amazed at how soft and refreshed my skin felt, something very unusual for a toner. I bought it, fully aware the price tag supported the brand name and it’s “Anti-Pollution Tulip Tree Extract” technology. I was a little skeptical since products only have small amounts of it’s “star” ingredient but the science intrigued me. The Tulip tree’s leaves have a waxy coat that traps pollutants that are then washed away by water. Part of me wondered how that translated to skincare but I loved how it felt and my curiosity won out.

This lasted me until the first days of February when I used it twice daily after cleansing. I do not know if this is remarkable since I do not usually keep tabs on how long products last. Amazingly I had zero (yes, NONE, NINGUNA, ZERO) breakouts. My oily, acne-prone skin has calmed down in the last three years but I still suffer from occasional hormonal breakouts…No blemishes! Not even those slightly inflamed spots where they haven’t broken out yet? NOPE. While this is awesome, this probably means my skin is not properly hydrated.

Would I re-purchase? Yes, though probably not for summer.

Feb favs

Boscia’s MakeUp-BreakUp Cool Cleansing Oil

(USD $28.00 for 5 fl.oz)

Face cleansing oils get a lot of love in the beauty community. I was scared to try one since my skin tends towards the oily. Adding oil to oil sounds downright crazy, right?  I didn’t think too much on it until I saw Tati’s (GlamLifeGuru) Sephora Beauty Oils review on Youtube, linked here. She mentioned she really liked Boscia’s cleansing oil and it was geared towards oily skin. I purchased it on a whim and I am so glad I did!

I usually do not wear a lot of face makeup (ie. foundation, concealer, blush, highlighter) together, however, over the last month because of antibiotics, craaazy flares and my cat biting my face and leaving scars (don’t ask — Sunsilk is growing up to be one CRANKY kitty!) I have added extra steps into looking healthier. On heavy coverup days, 30 to 60 seconds of massaging this product over my face and neck loosens all the makeup and water washes it away.

The downside to this cleansing oil is how painful it is on my eyes! The oil seeps into my eyes, even when they are closed, and burns them. It also blurs my vision for a few minutes. SCARY.

This is an easy fix, though. I use coconut oil to remove eye make-up and follow with Boscia to whisk away the excess oil.

Would I re-purchase? Yes.

M.A.C. Mineralize’s Charged Water Moisture Eye Cream

(USD $35.00 for ~0.50 fl.oz)

After I sung the praises of my hall of fame La Mer Eye Concentrate I received an insurance policy change, medical bills, and my new year deductible. No La Mer for me! There were a couple of eye creams I had my eye on but the negative reviews were so nasty I decided to go with one I had never heard of.

The consistency of this eye cream is light and thin. This is very important for me because I have perpetual puffy eyes. Apparently, the more product applied around the eyes the puffier they can be. So, for me, the lighter the formula the more “win” it is. The key ingredient is caffeine which cools on contact and depuffs overnight.

I gently tap the product on with my ring finger and I have no puffiness in the morning. This is a huge deal for me since Ambien makes my eyes even more puffy! Stop the Ambien, you say? I wish! Given my recent flares and the pain I am in, I cannot sleep without it.

I have never loved skincare products more!

Would I re-purchase? Yes, definitely for summer!

Lorac’s Pro Palette

(USD $42.00 for 16 eyeshadows and a mini primer)

feb comparison

This was an impulse buy. Everyone was talking about it and loving it. I only own one neutral eye shadow palette – Urban Decay’s Naked I. This is crazy since I only wear neutral eye colors! Needless to say, I wear Naked everyday and I am getting bored.

The Lorac Pro Palette is as wonderful as everyone says. The colors are ultra-pigmented and there are countless ways to wear them. The shades are different enough from the Urban Decay palette that I do not feel like I was purchasing the same thing (I added a picture of Naked I for comparison). The UD shadows are a lot deeper than Lorac’s, something that came as a welcome change.

The only drawback, for me, are the matte shades. Mattes make me look dead and dull so I always wear shimmer. This could be because I do not know how to balance both types of shadows. I want to experiment with this and the Pro palette is the perfect medium.

The shades are more pigmented than in the Naked palette so there is more fall out. Of course, with more pigmented shadows that is to be expected.

Will I re-purchase? Yes!

Product Review/Hate: Refresh Contacts – Contact Lens Comfort Drops

Disclaimer: If you like the product, great! This is my experience and opinion on the product.

I found out the RA began affecting my eyesight. I suffered from severe dry eye, inflammation and image displacement. (I thought I was going crazy. I was talking to people and all of a sudden they moved back a foot…!!)

I started an artificial tear regime, switched to daily contacts, and increased my glasses usage. For artificial tears my doctors recommended the Systane drops. LOOVE them. Unfortunately, they do not have a contacts version (that I have seen).

Did you know?

The preservatives in artificial tear drops destroy contact lenses?

I didn’t!

DSCF6926_fotor

I picked up the Refresh Contacts Contact Lens Comfort Drops. I was familiar with the brand so why not? These eye drops claimed to be “moisture drops for dry eyes”.

HAH!

Let me start by saying I do not usually hate products. I may not like them for one reason or another. I may find something better…

These drops dried out my eyes! Not only that, they dried out my eyelashes, eyelids and under eyes. If I wore eye make up, it instantly flaked, caked and crusted.

And the worst thing was it broke the seal between my lens and eyeball. The lens stuck on the outer edges but allowed air in. This resulted in blurred vision and more irritation. My eyes were more inflamed than before I added these “moisture” drops! Talk about uncomfortable!

On top of the product’s poor performance, the bottle’s tip and cap crusted over after the first use. Sorry but I did not want to put any of that near my eyes!

The point of artificial tears is to lubricate and reduce inflammation on the surface of the eye, not make it worse.

If you are purchasing eye drops stay away from the Refresh Contacts, I would recommend the Systane Preservative-free vials instead!

coconut oil, LUSH, review

I skipped the December favorites because nothing WOW’ed me.

I have a set skincare routine (linked to part one and two) that makes me look healthy so I rarely stray from it.

There are only two products that stood out to me in January but I will definitely keep them around.

Image

Trader Joe’s Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is so versatile! I initially purchased it from Trader Joe’s because I needed a good eye makeup remover. Manufactured removers are too harsh on my skin and baby oil messes with my eyesight. The coconut oil does not bleed into my eyes and it dissolves waterproof mascara, eyeshadow, everything! When heated, the solid melts within seconds and becomes so slick I cannot drag the delicate skin around the eye area.

Of course I purchased a pint of product but if I only removed makeup it would go bad long before I could use it up. It absorbs so quickly and is non-greasy. Unbelievable but true! I use it on my cuticles and hands for serious moisturizing. I also use it for shaving! Just WOW! It prevents razor burn and cuts. The razor slides smoothly and creates a close shave! And, unlike regular shaving creams, I can use coconut oil on dry skin!! Weee! I will never look back.

Time lapse: 3 seconds

LUSH Mint Julips Lip Scrub

I love LUSH’s solid shampoos and conditioners and I love mint chocolate EVERYTHING. The Pennsylvania brand Turkey Hill Mint Chocolate Chip is my favorite ice cream. So when I saw a mint chocolate flavored lip scrub at the LUSH store register I had to try it out!

Sure, I could use good old sugar to get the same results but this product is so yummy! It smells and tastes like mint chocolate and it is edible so I can just lick it off! (There is a bitter aftertaste if I ingest it – probably from the essential oils [vanilla, peppermint, jojoba, and tagetes]). When I use this before bed it removes the flakes from my lips and leaves them insanely smooth. I finish with thick lip balm and I wake up with incredibly soft lips.

Have you tried these products? What other uses can you get from coconut oil?

The Seven Deadly Sins of Make-Up Tag!

Chanel, La Mer, review, seven deadly sins of makeup tag, skincare

The lovely Ginger from ginger loves make-up tagged me for this super-fun post! I love reading these tags but rarely answer them myself…but the 7 deadly sins? How could I pass on that??

Now on to the fun!

GREED: What’s your most expensive beauty item?

℅ cremedelamer.com
(I could not get a good photo on my own for the life of me!)

Creme de La Mer The Eye Concentrate…I adore this cream! It’s goes on smooth and absorbs quickly. Every time I shell out the $185 (…I cringe and I do cringe every time) I feel a little guilty. Of course, I can use a different, less expensive eye cream, heck, I do not really need one! But, I want to keep my eyes young and I hope this product will do just that.

Better yet, the 0.5-ounce jar lasts me almost a year!

Regardless of the price, I enjoy this product. Maybe it is the price, maybe it is the celebrity cult following, maybe it is the metal applicator but even after two years, I still look forward to applying the cream. I take my time rolling the cream under my eyes, around the orbital bone, under the eyebrow and next to the bridge of the nose.

It is my little ritual! Don’t we all deserve a little greed in our lives?

WRATH: What item do you have a strong love/hate relationship with?

DSCF6627_fotor_fotor

Eyeshadow. Eye FREAKING Shadow.

I love eyeshadow. I love every formula! I wear it every day. My favorites are neutral and shimmery. They brighten and awaken my eyes! My Urban Decay Naked I palette delivers all those things. I rarely stray from it. The colors highlight my skin tone, apply like butter, and blend beautifully. I cannot ask for more!

But…

Over the last year, my eyelids and eyelashes became very oily! How annoying! Even when I go through all the motions (oil blotting papers,  primer, setting powder) I barely get two good hours of wear before shadows crease or fall below the eye.

Thankfully, I do not mind washing my face and re-applying make-up!

GLUTTONY: What brand takes up most of your collection?

DSCF6516_fotorChanel. I love Chanel. I always loved Chanel. My mother’s perfume was Chanel No 5. I also wear it but only for interviews. (Not sure why I have such a specific association).

My first Chanel purchase was Le Vernis in Black Pearl. That was the beginning of my nail painting, nail art addiction. I loved that nail polish. And of course, my Chanel addiction snowballed out of control.

Linda-Evangelista2

Now on to my story!

Back in Fall 2012 I saw one and only one ad for the Limited Edition clear base tortoiseshell Chanel sunglasses. I was in the market for sun specs and these were the only ones that caught my eye. I did not delve farther, after all, they were limited edition Chanel! I never found another pair I wanted more.

So, in February 2013 I started searching…

I know I had no hope of finding limited edition Spring 2012 Chanel sunglasses in the Winter of 2013. But I had to try.

I called my local Chanel boutique and asked if they had any in stock. They only had the brown tortoiseshell version. The associate went above and beyond and searched in the database to see if there were any in stock, anywhere. Success! One pair was available in HAWAII and they could ship them to my neck of the woods! I said I would call back when I made up my mind…well…

The following day my dogs got into a horrendous fight and I nearly lost Affie. My father and I pooled our resources to pay for her surgeries and recovery. Affie is my dog and I felt guilty about my father paying for the entire ordeal so I helped out as much as I could. No Chanel for me!

6 weeks later, I still lusted after them. No other pair held a torch to those precious designer glasses. I tried one last time. I called the boutique. The glasses were no longer in stock. Since they were limited edition they would be extremely difficult to track down. The associate offered to do a little digging and see if he might find a pair in the system somewhere. My heart sunk. Maybe it was for the best. I spent most of my week in scrubs and I rarely went out, what would I do with a pair of fabulous sunglasses?

I searched online but nobody was selling the clear based ones I so badly wanted.

A few hours later, I received a call from the same sales associate. He told me the database showed one final pair in stock, but he could not find them anywhere! He checked the computers, he called the store which had them last, nothing! He took a last stab and checked his store’s inventory. Guess what???? The sunglasses were there!!!

Oh. My. God.

I immediately put them on hold and went the following day to pick them up.

These sunglasses have and always will have a special place in my heart. The fact I managed to find them nearly a year after they first came out, then had to give them up, and found them again at my nearest boutique??…just wow. Everything aligned for me!

Chanel-5220-13133P-Cloth-Transparent_Violet-Gradient-35

SLOTH: What product do you ignore the most due to laziness?

Foundation and the blending that goes along with it. If I do not have to wear a base, I won’t. If I have pigmentation I “spot” conceal. However, I am super lazy about blending it properly. Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua is my Holy Grail foundation because after it oxidizes it matches my skin tone perfectly…eliminating the need for blending. Oh Chanel, how you enable me!

PRIDE: Which product gives you the most confidence?

DSCF6644_fotor_fotor

There is a very specific product: Soleil Tan de Chanel Sheer Illuminating Fluid.

This deep rose gold highlighter came out as part of the Summer 2013 collection. I had not yet found a highlighter I was fond of so I decided to give this a try.

Most days this is the only form of make up I wear. (I am so lazy about make-up it’s just sad! I actually high five myself in the mirror on the days I wake up and say “Damn I look good! No make up! Weeee!” – You can judge me if you wish 😉 ) It is completely multi-purpose. I wear it on the bridge of my nose, inner corners of my eyes, under the eyebrows, middle of the eyelid, over my cheekbones, forehead and chin and voila! I look totally put together…No mascara necessary!

Not only do I look put together but I also look healthy. If you have been following my blog for a while, you know skin dullness is my biggest concern. Unfortunately, it is a side-effect of my medical cocktail. It takes the luster out of my skin and more often than not, I look tired or plain sick. I apply this highlighter and I look more healthy!

LUST: What item is at the top of your list?

151720_a_LARGE

I have my eye on the 5-eyeshadow palette Ombres Matelassees de Chanel! I have the Urban Decay Naked I palette and keeping reminding myself they are extremely similar. I want to be good but I still lust after this product!

ENVY: Which makeup product/look looks great on others but not on you?

Lipstick. The darkest I can go is a sheer coral or peach in lipgloss form. I might be able to get away with a baby pink hybrid lip product. However, whenever I use lipstick I look ridiculous! I have a couple in colors I could not resist but I apply them by dabbing the color on with my fingers to get a sheer stain effect.

I tag anyone who would like to take part!

Cuticle Treatment?

climbing chalk, nail care

This will probably be the weirdest beauty treatment I ever write about, but….climbing chalk for cuticles!

For shape!

It sounds so strange. When I climb, I use a massive amount of chalk and it will stay on my fingers for hours. When I moisturize and re-paint my nails, my cuticles are pushed back and shaped!

I have no idea why  or how it happens. Maybe it has something to do with the chalk pulling out all the moisture and my cuticles receding? That does not even make sense. I do not know and I am definitely not complaining! 😀

Sunsilk likes her chalk too!

BDG, Benefit, Dior, Egyptian Magic Cream, Pond's, Urban Outfitters

Image

I finished my tub of Nivea Soft. I pulled out my half-empty Egyptian Magic Cream from last spring (I had to shelve it for the summer). I adore this cream. I only need a quarter size amount for my face and neck. It is very greasy so I have to be careful. I emulsify the product between my fingers and pat it all over. My skin is very oily but I only break out on this product for the first couple of days before I get used to it. Usually if a cream breaks me out, it will continuously break me out. I am not sure why Egyptian Magic does not follow suit but I am not complaining.

I started using Dior Pure Poison as my daily perfume. It is the closest to my all-time favorite Dior Tendre Poison. It is light and floral enough for day. I use the spicier notes of Dior Poison in the evenings and they layer very nicely together.

The weather deities granted us a second summer! At the end of August I bought tons of new sweaters. I was so thrilled to start wearing them until the temperatures rose to the 80s. Enter my prematurely stored Urban Outfitters BDG Mid-Rise Alexa shorts. These are the only shorts that fit me well. I am a short, petite, curve-less woman and I can never find shorts that fit. I love all the colors they come in, especially the bright red!

I saved the best for last!

Benefit’s Watt’s Up highlighter & Bad Gal Lash mascara and Pond’s Wet Cleansing Towelettes will always have a very special place in my heart. I recently crashed out at a friend’s house and did not pack my usual skincare. When I spend the night out I do not usually wash my face before bed. However, I use the towelettes the next morning to quickly remove grime. Additionally, I wake up pretty pale in the mornings and the rubbing from the wipe pumps blood back into my face.

Anyways…

The next morning my amazing Bad Gal Lash mascara had not flaked or come off. At all. I was amazed. My makeup looked exactly the same as the night before. After “washing” my face, I added Watt’s Up to my nose, the inner corners of my eyes, under my brow bone, chin, temples and forehead. I finished with two swipes of mascara and I was set. I looked fantastic. The highlighter made me look completely awake and blurred any puffiness.

I looked put together enough for work and nobody could tell I did not complete my usual skincare routine.

August Faves 2013

August Faves 2013 by mysengupta

Most of these items were my go-tos for the entire summer. I not only live in a very hot, humid location but I have extremely oily skin (eyelids included). Talk about a double whammy!

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power Gel is my one and only cleanser. It is the only thing that keeps my acne at bay but does not dry out my skin. It is the only Neutrogena product that does not cause my skin to flake. It does not have an overwhelming smell and I only need a little bit of product to sufficiently lather my face and neck.

I buy my tea tree oil from CVS Pharmacy because the Body Shop item is too expensive for a little amount of product. I use tea tree oil as a toner. I use a plastic bottle to make my own toner. I add one teaspoon of tea tree oil and fill the rest with water. Undiluted tea tree is too harsh for my skin. When I have a rogue pimple I will apply it full strength, before bed, for no more than five minutes. It does not dry it out completely but I notice a huge difference in the morning. After I wash my face I tone it and let it dry. It is absolutely amazing. It stings a little but it keeps acne at bay and smoothes my skin.

I was in India when I discovered Nivea Soft. The humidity where I live is nothing compared to the humidity in India. I use no more than a tablespoon of product to cover my face and neck. It effectively moisturizes and does not break me out. It works very well for me over the summer. It is very light and does not have a strong smell. It will not provide enough moisture come fall. I already notice my skin is drier in the morning.

Thanks to the summer humidity, thicker moisturizers are too heavy and trap a ton of dirt. My two favorites are Nivea Smooth Sensation and Vaseline Spray and Go. Smooth Sensation is a lot lighter than other Nivea products and absorbs quickly. I like the Spray and Go because it is fast. It shaves off at least 30 to 60 seconds. However, I definitely do not use this product for moisture. While my skin does not feel dry it also does not feel hydrated. Given the humidity, it is not a huge problem. I will definitely have to retire it for fall.

My sleeping schedule during the summer is far from “scheduled”. I never go to bed at the same time two days in a row and I rarely get the same number of hours. If I mix that with my medications and I have the perfect recipe for constant puffy eyes! Every morning I wake up with puffiness. Clinique All About Eyes De-Puffing Serum is an eye-saver! It feels instantly cool and dries quickly. I use it morning and night after I wash my face. Since starting this product I do not have any puffiness in the morning. My only con is application. I have to hold the pen straight down so that the metal rollerball does not snag against my skin.

I never apply make-up without my trusty Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion. It is the only thing that keeps my eyeshadow, mascara and eyeliner from slipping all over my eyelids. Sometimes I have to re-blend my eyeshadow around the crease but that only happens if I do not wait for the product to become tacky. That is my only pet peeve. It dries quickly so I have to blend quickly before I pull at the skin. Even though it dries quickly, it takes a while to become tacky. If I keep my eyes open it does not stay put in the creases. I try to look down for a few seconds while it sets. I also apply a little bit under my bottom lash line. That eliminates the dreaded raccoon eyes!

Urban Decay Naked I Palette is my one and only true love. I use every single shadow in this palette except for “Virgin” and “Naked”. Each shadow is very pigmented and I only need to use a little to get great coverage. Paired with the primer potion, my eye makeup lasts all day. My favorite colors are “Half-Baked”, “Smog” and “Darkhorse”. Compared to the Naked II palette, the colors are warmer so they work better with my skintone. The eyeshadow brush is sturdy and deposits pigment evenly on the eyes.

My favorite mascara is Chanel Inimitable Intense in Noir. It does not clump and gives the illusion of massive volume without adding any weight. If it is really hot and humid outside it will run. It does flake at the end of the day but it is nothing a little water can not swipe away! For the hotter days when I know my trusty Chanel will not hold up I grab Benefit “Bad Gal Lash”. It adds depth and length to my lashes. Honestly, it does not look like I am even wearing mascara! If I am not wearing eye-make up I will add it to the tips to define my lashes. I have no experience with flaking, running, or clumping.

I just finished using a small sample of Dior “Tendre Poison” eau de toilette. It was an old sample my mother had. It is light but works perfectly for the evening. Within minutes the perfume has melded with my skin and is almost undetectable. What I mean is it basically becomes my natural scent. A lot of perfumes sit on my skin and retain their smell. Tendre Poison becomes one with me. People can not tell that I am wearing perfume. Unfortunately, since they no longer make this perfume I switched to Dior “Poison”. The smell is stronger and spicier but after the initial notes lift it reacts similarly to Tendre Poison.

I suspect a lot of these items will carry over to September as well. I love to happen across new products that I love so hopefully there will be some new things on the list!
