Purchased by me. Some affiliate links.

This is my first year indulging in a beauty advent calendar and Liberty London just destroyed the bars of every other company. I did some (albeit, not a lot) research on different brand calendars and Liberty London’s seemed the best based on value, size, and variety. It was on the more expensive side (165 British Pounds) and factoring a UK mail forwarding service the final price came to about 230 US Dollars. The full contents (25 separate days) valued at over 500 BP and while I may have rolled my eyes at first I definitely believe it now.

I opened each drawer daily on my Instagram Stories (@monicawithra) but I decided to write a round-up post of every item and my opinion on it. I love most of the items but there are a couple I can do without. But hey, how often do you love all 25 products??

exterior

The Liberty London Advent calendar is huge! It has a gorgeous painted double flapped door that claps shut and opens forward. Inside are 25 small Liberty print drawers with copper numbers embossed on the front. Each product is nestled in cute copper tissue paper confetti. I repurposed many of the drawers for storage and am currently racking my brain on how to save the large box. It’s just too pretty to throw away!

This post is very long so grab a snack and settle in or use the links to jump to specific items. Enjoy!

Aveda Hand Relief Moisturizing Creme with invigorating rosemary mint aroma

 ($24.00 here) – Purchase? Yes

This is a pretty impressive moisturizer. It absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy cast. The cream has a nice yet strong herbal scent.

Aurelia ‘Refine and Polish’ Miracle Balm

($98.00 here) – Purchase? No.

It is a nice midweek pick-me-up but not as effective as I hoped. The exfoliating beads are not rough enough to adequately remove dead skin and my skin looks no different after use. The Estee Lauder ‘Clear Difference’ Purifying Exfoliator Mask (linked here) and Ole Henriksen Truth Sugar Glow Polishing Mask (linked here) are both similar, less expensive and way more effective.

Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Powder Pink

($30.00 here) – Purchase? Maybe.

Bobbi Brown is the queen of the natural, light makeup and she is cool to boot. Regardless, the items in her makeup line are long-lasting, subtle and fit a wide range of skin colors. Powder Pink is a perfect pinky neutral for me. I love the creme consistency and love wearing this on my lips as a light stain.

↑top

Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo

($7.00 – $30.00 here) – Purchase? I will go to the store and ask for another sample 😛

This is the one time I am disappointed in the advent calendar. Liberty London gives us the same samples Kiehl’s gives in-store. Not cool. Regardless, this shampoo is pretty impressive. It smells of coconut and cleans my hair well without stripping it of moisture.

↑top

JinSOON Nail Polish in Coquette

($18.00 here) – Purchase? No

This is one of the items not included in my Advent Calendar. The mail forwarding service removed this because they could not ship it overseas.

I hear mixed reviews on this brand and honestly would not buy it on my own because of the price and less than original color options.

↑top

Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer

($36.00 here) – Purchase? No

I am not a foundation girl so I rarely wear primer all over my face. I generally hit the spots where my pores look a little bigger. This primer is nothing special and I am not sure I would wear it in the Spring/Summer when the air is more humid and my skin is more oily.

↑top

C.O. Bigelow Rose Salve

($7.50  here) – Purchase? No

This product is a straight dupe for the original Smith’s Rosebud Salve. However, unlike Smith’s, C.O. Bigelow’s has a very off-putting strong, fake rose smell. I’ll stick with the original Smith’s which is also a dollar less expensive, found here.

↑top

Malin + Goetz Vitamin E Face Moisturizer

($46.00 here) – Purchase? Yes

I am surprised I like this moisturizer so much because Vitamin E makes my face break out. The light cream has a pleasant fresh scent and feels cool upon application. It absorbs quickly and does not leave a greasy film.

↑top

Davines OI All in One Milk with Roucou Oil

($25.00 here) – Purchase? OH YEAH

I gushed about how this magically moisturizes my skin and removes lines, etc before I realized this is a hair oil. Whoops. But, in my defense, the bottle says Multi-Beauty so why can’t I use it as a hand cream?

As a hair oil, it is completely weightless and does not leave my hair feeling greasy or shiny. It smells fresh and absorbs quickly.

↑top

Marvis Toothpastes in Amarelli Licorice and Strong Classic Mint

 ($10.50 here) – Purchase? Yes

These taste so good. I am partial to the licorice one but neither contain flouride or other anti-cavity ingredients so they are only useful as a mid-day breath freshener.

↑top

Byredo Bal d’Afrique Hand Cream

($35.00 here) – Purchase? Yes

This is a very effective hand moisturizer. I only need a quarter-size amount to fully coat my hands. This cream is fresh and light if not a little greasy.

↑top

NARS Lip Gloss in Baby Doll

 ($26.00 here) – Purchase? No

This product is just your average gloss. NARS has never WOW-ed me with their lip glosses primarily because they are not ultra-pigmented or long-lasting and the darker colors feather. For the price point, I definitely expect more.

↑top

Eve Lom Cleanser with muslim cloth

($50.00 – $135.00 here) – Purchase? Yes

Skincare is a ritual. And, the Eve Lom Cleanser is just that. Everything about applying to removing this cleanser mimics an at home spa experience. This is an effective cleanser but irritates the eyes. I definitely cannot use this during the summer when I become more oily.

↑top

Odejo Eau de Toilette Rollerball

10ml full size (only available at Liberty London) – Purchase? No.

This is one of the items not included in the advent calendar and unfortunately, I know nothing of this brand except it is exclusive to Liberty London and relatively new.

↑top

Trish McAvoy Lip Color in Pink Nude

($28.50 here) – Purchase? Probably not.

I know nothing about this brand and don’t hear a lot about it on social media platforms. The lipstick feels light, non-drying and fragrance free. It is not particularly long-wearing but this the shade is a lovely pink nude perfect to even out my natural lip color.

↑top

Dermalogica Daily Microexfoliant

($54.00 here) – Purchase? No.

Microexfoliants are fantastic when my skin needs a refresh and I don’t want to use harsh ingredients. Unfortunately, this one was not great. Once wet, the fine powder forms a paste and the scrubbing particles dissolve completely. This is not at all useful as a exfoliator.

↑top

Votary Facial Oil in Heal My Skin

($102.00 here)  – Purchase? Maybe!

I was skeptical about putting oil directly on my face but this sandalwood and herb scented oil absorbs quickly and keeps my skin feeling soft. I only need four or five drops to adequately cover my face and neck so the bottle will last a while.

↑top

Brow Bar – Night Balm

($45.00 here for day & night balms) – Purchase? Oddly, quite possibly

Initially this product really confused me. I had never heard of a night cream for my brows! While I don’t use the bbrowbar conditioner as it is intended it does make a great lavender scented cuticle treatment.

↑top

Skin Laundry Gentle Foaming Face Wash

($20.00 here) – Purchase? Yes

Skin Laundry is a new to me brand but after trying the face wash, I am definitely interested in trying some of its products. This face wash is gentle and great for a mid-day refresh when I don’t want to use harsher ingredients.

↑top

Kai – Body Lotion

($37.00 here) – Purchase? No

Complimentary toiletries are just as effective as this moisturizer, free and smell way better.

↑top

Dr. Sebagh -Pro Serum Repair with Hyaluronic Acid

($175.00 here) – Purchase? YES

This serum is magic and I need it in my life. I don’t care how expensive it is. I only need a drop and a half to cover my face and neck. It immediately plumps and hydrates my skin and protects it throughout the day. If the brand ever discontinues it I might riot.

↑top

Surratt Artistique Blush in Ponceau

($32.00 here) – Purchase? Depends.

The packaging is flimsy but cute and nice to look at. The blush is pigmented and blends out easily to a natural wash of color. It builds up nicely and evenly. However, it settles quickly into fine lines and highlights dry patches.

↑top

Espa Overnight Hydration Therapy

($58.00 – here) – Purchase? Yes

I love the strong, spicy lavender scent which lingers long enough for me to relax before bed. My skin feels soft and hydrated but not greasy. This product dries sticky which I don’t  like so I prefer the Lancome Overnight Sleeping Facial (linked here) which absorbs completely and is less expensive per ounce.

↑top

Le Labo fragrances in Santal 33 or Thé Noir 29

($175 – $290 here and here, respectively)

This is the third item I did not receive. It would have been a full size (retailing at the $175 mark). I think I would enjoyed the Santal so thankfully, there is a stand alone store right here in DC which I need to check out soon!

↑top

Diptyque Mini Candle in Figuier

($23.00 – $62.00 here) – Purchase? Yes

This smells exactly like pine trees and Christmas. I fell in love with the scent even before I lit it. The tiny candle gives off a fair amount of scent but also a good amount of soot. I now know why these candles are such a big deal, even though they are expensive they are worth the money.

Born Pretty Store Nail Foils | Review

Born Pretty Store, Nail Art, review

Items provided for honest review.

foilsThe 31-Day Challenge starts tomorrow and I had this marvelous idea to use these new foil stickers (linked here) for the first prompt. If you are familiar with the 31-Day Challenge you know you do one look a day and generally don’t have time for multiple ones. So, it was my luck (and maybe good sense) that I tried out these stickers beforehand because there is no way I could put them on Instagram! They did not work well or look cute on my nails.

review3Now, due consideration, these foils are supposed to be used with gel polishes (so the stickers cure and set under the UV lights) but they are certainly not interchangeable with traditional lacquers.

review1They are not stretchy like traditional water decals from Born Pretty Store and do not bend nicely over the “c curve” of the nail. Furthermore, they do not disintegrate with acetone so I have to cut them perfectly to match my nail size and there is no wiggle room for clean up. The foils crumble and bunch at the tip so they peel off relatively quickly and top coat does not extend their longevity in the slightest. Thankfully, even though I cannot remove them traditionally (with nail polish remover) they peel off nicely and evenly.

review2I do not use gel polish so I will probably never use these again which is a shame because the designs are super cute!

Watercoloring Water Decals | Nail Art

Born Pretty Store, Nail Art, Nicole Diary, review

Some items provided for honest review.

I completely fell behind reviewing products this summer because of my summer camp job. I was just too exhausted to paint my nails let alone try and maneuver new products. Back in May, new to me brand, Nicole Diary, contacted me about trying some water decals and I jumped at the chance. You all know how much I adore water decals. They are quick and easy nail art which are perfect when I don’t have time or am too tired to do my nails.

I also played around with coloring the designs in with watercolors since I’ve been on a huge coloring stint lately. On paper, I use everything from pens to pencils and gel pens (throwback to the 90s!). It was fun to do my nails in the same way but took a lot of patience and a steady hand. Regardless, I am definitely pleased with how well these came out and think they are worth the extra time.

WATERDECALS

I couldn’t leave well enough alone and added some Born Pretty Store nail sticker/vinyls. I waited a full day to add these since I didn’t want to ruin/bring up the base color.

The water decals are typical, run of the mill and easy to use. After submerging them for about 20 seconds in cool water they slid off the backing paper smoothly. Over at Amazon.com and Aliexpress.com Nicole Diary has a wide selection of cute designs.

While I am personally not the biggest fan of the nail stickers this is more a personal choice than an issue with the actual product. I prefer easy, quick nail art options (like water decals) instead of waiting a full day to apply vinyls. Yes, I could have waited a couple of hours but a) I didn’t want to and b) it didn’t seem like enough time! While in theory the circles are extremely cute they would work better on larger bigger nails as to capture more of the design. On my short nails, I did not get enough circles and got too much negative space.

You be the judge, though!

Vinyls: Born Pretty Store ($1.79 here)

What do you think? I hope you like these as much as I do!

Spring 2016 Collection – daniPRO Nails | Review

Press Sample

IMG_2163I was recently contacted by a PR agency I’ve worked with in the past to test and review a new-to-me brand called “daniPRO”. According to the PR statement, this brand is innovative because it was created by podiatrist, Dr. Gary Evans. daniPRO lacquers are 4-free (meaning they do not contain toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin and DBP). However, upon closer inspection, I noticed these nail polishes do contain camphor, which is considered a toxin making daniPRO’s “free of toxins” statement website not completely true.

The stand-out ingredient in these polishes is undecylenic acid which helps prevent fungus. It is also important to note the fine print on both the bottle and website that say this ingredient is “not effective on nails”. What does that even mean? The ingredient is not effective on nails or it is not effective at treating fungus?

Honestly, even before I put on this nail polish, I noticed too many “discrepancies” for my liking but as long as its 3-free (no DBP, Formaldehyde or Toulene) I’m happy to try the nail polish as nail polish.

I was sent four separate colors, and a top coat, for review. The colors are a light petal pink, a more electric one and a “true” red.

The top coat was nothing special. It dried relatively quickly but it pulled the base color which does not make it ideal for sealing in nail art. This type of pulling and base removal is one of my biggest pet peeves and I cannot overlook it!

Forever Girl is a light petal pink. I applied four (yes, 4!) coats and the result was still patchy and streaky. The formula is thin and floods the cuticles easily. My camera is very forgiving in daylight but as you can see in both photos below this polish is no good.

bottleshotingrass

My Girl is your typical bright pink. It appears more electric in the sun. I achieved “acceptable” opacity with 3 coats but the final result is just as streaky as Forever Girl. The formula is very thin and immediately floods the cuticles. However, this polish’s one redeeming quality is that it cleans up very easily (which is rare with a color like this). It’s a shame really because I loved this color against my skin tone.

pink2pinkwbottle_edited-1

First Kiss is a true candy apple red . I am pleasantly surprised with this formula. It is thin but not streaky and I reach full opacity after two coats. If I am in a rush I might get away with one coat but there is a slightly visible nail line.

red

red2_edited-1

Final Thoughts: The formulas were subpar (there are much better ones out there). I could forgive this major flaw if the colors were ones I could not live without. Even after looking at the full selection on the daniPRO website I am 100% sure every other nail polish brand out there sells them. The top coat pulls the color and does not given the same glossy finish as others I’ve tried. It will, however, work well in creating DIY jellies.

At $18.00 a pop you’re better off buying Zoya. Their polishes are cheaper, have better formulas in the exact same colors and more.

Blue Marbling w/ Tool | Nail Art & Review

Born Pretty Store, marbling, Nail Art, review

Product provided for honest review.

I have not yet mastered the needle drag marble. For the most part, I get the design I want but I always scrape through the bottom layers leaving an unsightly nick to my bare nail.

marbletoolfullmarblingtoolI noticed Born Pretty Store a new marbling comb. I wanted to streamline a one-needle design which can be painstakingly long! The grip of this tool is easy  and the comb glides through polish easily. However, the needles are in a straight line so the polishes mix together too easily and I quickly lose the marbleized look. If the picks are staggered I could get a smaller, more detailed design which I usually prefer.

St. Patty’s Day Green Waterfall | Nail Art

Born Pretty Store, Nail Art, review, St. Patrick's Day manicure, waterfall manicure

Tools provided for review. All opinions are my own.

I am surprised I didn’t hop on the St. Patty’s green bandwagon this year. I own more green nail polishes than any other color but I felt like I had used them all too many times. Surprisingly, there are very few (if any) green polishes I never use!

However, I knew I had to dress up my digits for the “holiday” so I went with something simple and RA-friendly: a waterfall manicure.

For this look, I used some new Born Pretty Store nail art brushes. The one I bought from Sally’s Beauty frayed recently and I wanted smaller strokes than my other brushes could give. This trio of brushes is nice and I can sometimes get a rather thin line but each was a little thicker than I originally anticipated. They are cute, easy to control and sturdy so I really have nothing bad to say about them!

Fuller House – My Thoughts on the Highly-Anticipated Reboot | Lifestyle

14 Monday Mar 2016

Full House, Fuller House, Netflix, nostalgia, reboot, review, TV Show

May contain spoilers.

I am a 90s kid who grew up with Full House so I was one of the thousands sitting on the edge of my seat for the reboot Fuller House.

The original show is one of my all-time favorite shows and I own the entire series on DVD. Whenever I feel particularly stressed I pop in a CD and run the show in the background. The show is charming, funny and cute.

The premise of Fuller House is virtually the same as its parent series. DJ’s (now a successful veterinarian) husband dies and she is left raising three sons on her own. Stephanie and Kimmy move into the original Tanner home and help out. Does this sound familiar?

In anticipation for the Feb. 26, 2016 premiere on Netflix Instant Streaming I re-watched Full House with no regrets.

Below are my thoughts on different parts of the new series and how they may compare to the old. Enjoy!

Pilot/First Episode

I did not like the first episode of Fuller House. It is disjointed, awkward, and you wonder what the prize was for the “how many Full House references can we make?” game.

I had a couple of specific issues with the episode as well which when added together made for one of the most obnoxious pilots I think I’ve ever seen.

It is no secret Full House was not filmed live so unsurprisingly Fuller House uses the same setup. Unfortunately, Fuller House relies too heavily on the sound board. The first five minutes is a constant wave of applause as  Full House alumni enter the scene. Trust us, we know who these people are!….Chances are we wouldn’t watch this show if we didn’t.

Second, the episode is just awkward! It has been over 20 years since the original show ended and well…the chemistry between the older actors is gone. The camaraderie we love from the Full House is lost between Bob Saget, John Stamos, and Dave Coulier. However, while the group dynamic prominently changes, singular characters stay the same, namely, Jesse, Becky and Joey.

Full House began in 1987 and current pop culture has evolved into something completely different. The writers tried, rather unsuccessfully, to bridge the gap so it doesn’t make sense to the new viewer and feels odd to the old. The subsequent episodes are well updated but I find it odd that the writers didn’t bridge this introductory episode properly.

The most awkward moment of the 35 minute pilot (other than Stephanie’s short-lived British accent) is when Danny mentions Michelle and her fashion empire. The entire cast stares straight ahead at the camera for WAY TOO LONG. It feels like a minute. And, all the while, that blasted laugh box is going. I understand the cast throwing shade at the Olsen twins but that is just too much.

Speaking of…

Let’s Talk the Elephant in the Room…or Lack of (Michelle Tanner/the Olsen Twins)

Michelle Tanner’s absence from Fuller House is nothing short of conspicuous. Do I care? Not necessarily. Michelle was my least favorite character on Full House. She was spoiled, bratty and annoying. And, she really wasn’t as cute as they made her out to be. Only children look like perfect little angels compared to Michelle.

Regarding her absence on the Fuller House I think her presence would detract from the show. She would feel out of place in the already strong group Kimmy, DJ and Stephanie form.

However, I think it is really low of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen to not even guest-star (even the little twins did!). The original show made them famous and gave them their start in this industry. Elizabeth and James would not be a thing without Full House. It is extraordinarily “rude” of them to not even acknowledge this. They spent years shedding their goody-two shoes imagine they were branded with from Full House and their made for TV movies and that’s okay but they should appreciate what this show did for them!

And, I’m sorry but “I haven’t acted since I was 17” is BS. Just admit you do not want to play the character anymore and cannot convincingly play the part.

Danny Tanner/Bob Saget

While I think the Olsen twins should have at least guest-starred, I wonder if Bob Saget shouldn’t have just bowed out. It was particularly obvious that he couldn’t care less about re-visiting Danny Tanner. Under normal circumstances, as a fan, I would appreciate his appearances but Saget was so unattached I almost wish he hadn’t been there at all.

Danny Tanner was one of my favorite characters. He was awkward, goofy and kind of freakish and Saget played him well. Danny Tanner liked what he liked and had no reservations about who he was and all the while being one terrific father!

The Danny on Fuller House is nothing like the Danny on Full House. The “new and improved” Danny Tanner feels lazy, awkward and couldn’t care less about his family. He cannot wait to get to LA and play with his new wife. Oh, and speaking of his new wife: there is no real chemistry and we know she is there for his money.

Not to be wholly unfair, we do glimpse the old Danny during Saget’s second guest appearance. He cares about his daughter’s grandchildren but I still get the sense he doesn’t really want to be there.

Joey, Jesse, and Becky

I only want to spend a few minutes on these guys. The characters matured but remained the same goofy, lovable but mostly eccentric people we grew to love.

During Full House, Joey could not go a full two sentences without making a joke. It was annoying at times but I appreciated just how talented Dave Coulier was. During Fuller House, Joey makes a few jokes here and there but it is obvious the character grew up. At the beginning of his career, Joey was highly unsuccessful and overcompensated by turning everything into a joke. Now that he plays 10 shows a week in Las Vegas, he can be a normal human being in his every day life!

I don’t have a lot to say about Jesse except that he is exactly the same but older. He has the same wit and eccentricities and is still madly in love with with his wife.

I always really loved Becky. She was sweet, independent, and sassy. She never changed to be with Jesse and was a great friend, aunt and mother. She was successful and unapologetic about it. She was a woman I could aspire to be. Now, 30 years older, she is exactly the same with a little bit of baby fever thrown in. It might sound strange if you have not watched the new series yet. She was always happy with her two twins and pleased she still worked but she played a woman of “a certain age” extremely well!

The New Cast

I really cannot speak more highly about Cameron-Bure, Sweetin and Barbara’s performances! I am glad the show revolves around them with the older characters cast in supporting roles because these three have such a great chemistry that carries through from the original show. The plot doesn’t make sense sometimes (hello, Bollywood episode) but I somehow always forgive the crazy because their relationships are spot on.

The biggest difference between Full and Fuller House is the storyline. Yes, the premise is the same but this reboot is less about the family as a whole than each character’s separate lives: DJ’s dating life, Stephanie trying to maintain her independence, Kimmy and her ex, Max and Cosmo…you get my drift…

I know they did this mostly for the fans to see where the girls are now but I think the show is sorely lacking in the family dynamic. This was the best part of the original series. Even when we learned about one character there was always some family member on the sidelines. And, because the first season focuses on the girls we miss out on the incredible talent on the child actors. They breathe life into their stereotypical teenage characters but barely get any storyline.

As a whole I think the show is cute for nostalgic reasons and has vast room for growth. Netflix announced there will be a second season so I hope the producers and writers start to take this reboot seriously and gives it the potential for a true stand alone show!

Just don’t watch the pilot first! Heh…
