Flashback Friday: The First Days

Tags

,

Well, if I’m going to “flashback” I might as well start at the very beginning.

The first day/night we brought Marmalade home is totally engrained in my mind. I have never gotten less sleep in my life.

She was already 1 year old so she was extremely nervous about being in a new home. She sat in the fireplace all day.

My assumption was she would just sleep there during the night. Good assumption? NOPE.

After everyone went to sleep she came out to play. Literally. She barreled into my room and explored. She found a marble and rolled it up and down my wood floor for hours. She wanted to explore the desk so she jumped up on my chair. At the time she did not know what a rolling chair was….

Cat and chair went crashing into the desk. Marmalade, who was extremely startled, ran back to the safety of the fireplace.

Good, I could go back to sleep. But just in case I closed my door. BAD IDEA.

Less than an hour later, this blasted cat was pushing herself against my door and yowling her head off. I grudgingly let her in. It was a lose-lose situation. She has a piercing yowl, I would not be able to sleep with her outside my door. I should have known I would not sleep with her in my room either!

She continued to play with the marble. She kept throwing herself at my closet door until it opened. Once she was inside, she proceeded to throw everything off the dressers and make a nest for herself.

She tried a second time to get up on the rolling chair. This time she succeeded!

She walked across my face and wanted me to pet her.

Then came the moment of truth. She was ready for me to pick her up. One problem: I had never picked up a cat in my life. I tried to pick her up and ended up dropping her on the corner of my wooden trundle bed. Whoops…

She ran back to the safety of her fireplace.

When I told my dad what happened, he laughed and said Marmalade was going to be my cat.

He was right.

Marmalade takes care of me. She stays with me when I am sick or hurt or sad. She protects me (or thinks she does).

I am so lucky this cat found me!

BTW, she is sitting on a very large ceramic baby Jesus…who is wearing an ornante crown

Let’s start a “Flashback Friday”

Tags

I was getting ready for bed, wrestling Sunsilk for my blanket when it hit me.

I have FOUR pets.

Four individual living beings. FOUR.

Just writing this blows my mind. My pack has always been there for me. We have not added anyone new for 7 years but that doesn’t matter.

Adding animals individually when the pack hierarchy is already established is tricky. The pack could reject the newbie. The newbie could try to take alpha, etc. We had absolutely no problems. All four of them got along from the get-go.

FOUR.

I guess I always thought of my pets as one cohesive unit. Their emotions run the same, they spend time together. They are one. It just hit me that individually there are four.

On Fridays, I am going to start a “Flashback Friday” post. Just little blurb about my favorite memories of my pets. Without them, I do not know where I would be right now. These pets saved my life. They constantly remind me there is always love, goodness, and forgiveness in the world.

Nail Art: Peppermint Snow Day

Brrr! It’s cold! My little Affie needs her sweater to go outside! It’s time to turn those pjs inside out! (Did you ever do that for a snow day??)

When I set out to paint my nails today all I knew was I wanted to stamp. I did not even know what colors I was going to use!

I closed my eyes and grabbed a bottle and came up with Sephora by OPI “Cover Me in Petals” and I took it from there.

Image

Sephora by OPI “Cover Me in Petals” is extremely pigmented. Especially since I was stamping I could probably get away with one coat. I decided to do 2 just for insurance.

I stamped with Sephora by OPI “Caffeine Fix” and Bundle Monster plate “BM 320”.

I did a subtle design next. Since I already had rectangles I continued with sharp edges. I used Cover Girl glosstinis “Inferno” and Bundle Monster plate “BM 315”.

I wanted to use silver with these colors. Initially, I tried lines but the silver masked the designs underneath so….what looks better in silver than snowflakes?

I love love love Essie “No Place Like Chrome” for stamping. It is so pigmented, I cannot go wrong. I used Bundle Monster plate “BM 319”.

One coat of Seche Vite and one coat of INM Northern Lights polished the look.

I love this manicure. It reminds me of peppermints and the holidays!

Home-Cooked Dog Food Recipes: Veggie Medley

…hehe that rhymed.

I took this picture the day before I could no longer pick Saachi up.

Why a medley?

Kale and collard greens are both high in essential vitamins and antioxidants that fight cancer and infection. This is especially important for Saachi. Mastiffs tend to get a lot of cysts and fatty deposits. They are usually benign but it only takes one malignancy for health problems to set in. They are both great sources of fiber. There is no reason to mix the two veggies. In fact, it would be too much of a good thing and end up being detrimental.

Green beans are extremely high in antioxidants and are a great source of carotenoids.

Carrots are extremely high in carotenoids. These are a great anti-inflammatory and are also great for eye health. They are also extremely high in Vitamin C.

Cauliflower is a nutritional powerhouse. It is high in Vitamin K and fatty acids. It is great source of fiber. It lowers the risk of cancer and is an anti-inflammatory.

The best thing about these vegetables is they all have a low fat content and do not have a lot of natural sugar. Dogs do not digest sugar well and it will weaken their stomachs. That is why tomatoes, celery, etc. are not great for them.

I could go on about why we choose these vegetables since they all have awesome qualities. Our main concern is fiber, hearth health and anti-cancer benefits.

Recipe

  • 1 pound green beans
  • 3 pounds kale OR collard greens
  • 1 pound carrots
  • 1 cauliflower
  • 1 take-out plastic container of water
  • 1 tbsp turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 or 3 bay leaves

Chop the veggies as finely as possible. Bigger pieces are more difficult to digest and will probably just pass through without

Add all the veggies to a large pot with the spices and water.

Honestly, I could get away with half a container of water but I think the extra steam makes the veggies even softer

Turn the stove to high heat and bring to a boil.

Once the water is boiling, cover and lower to low heat.

Stir occasionally for 40 minutes.

Just a note on storing: I do not drain the water because it keeps the veggies moist in the freezer and refrigerator.

October Favorites (Caution: Word-Heavy)

When the weather gets cold I cover my head. Hats are my thing. I bought quite a few in my favorite cut? from TopShop. They are thick, warm, soft, and so cute with the little bobble at the top. I already look very young. People think I am 15 years old and these hats just fit: my style, my personality, my look. People always laugh and say “Monica, if anyone could pull off the puff, it’d be you!”

Strangely enough, I hate gloves. I do not like covering my fingers, but my hands get super cold and dry. My happy medium is the fingerless glove! Love love love it! On top of that, my nails always look cool so why cover them up! I only have one pair right now but I ordered a few more and I hope they are what dreams are made of.

My eye make-up remover is Johnson’s Baby Oil with Aloe and Vitamin E. I prefer it over the original formula because of the aloe. It is harder to find as I only get it at Giant Food Store. Before, I applied it to a cotton round and gently rubbed the eyeliner/mascara diagonally down towards my cheekbones. There was too much tugging and I was not removing the eyeliner wedged between the lashes. This technique made my eyes puffier. Now, I apply the oil directly to my fingers and, in a circular motion, rub until all the makeup has run down. There is more slip and my fingers do not tug at the skin.  My eyes are less puffy in the morning, they are less dry and I have no residual makeup! The condition of my eyelashes and skin are better since I am rubbing the oil into that area.

Purpose Cleanser is my in-shower face wash. Whenever I take a shower I always remove my make-up and wash my face. I just want a general plain cleanser to take care of “day-dirt”. I use this on my eyes without stinging but it is not great at removing makeup. I have turned quite a few people on to this cleanser. It is the definition of “non-irritating”.

St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub is part of my routine. I use this for body exfoliation every four to seven days. I love this scrub. It is simple and effective. I only need a little amount per limb. If I use too much product it scratches at my skin but the ratio of cream to scrubbing grains is good. I do not care for the smell but it does not linger. I love the idea of fancy scrubs but for a product that stays on for a couple of minutes, it just seems a waste.

There was a sale at Rite Aid so I decided to try Gillette Satin Care with a Touch of Olay. W.O.W.!! My legs are soft and smooth, even without moisturizer afterwards. I can barely see my pores! It foams nicely and I do not need a lot to cover my legs! The smell is non-offensive as well, very fresh. I do not need to press hard for a close shave and older razors do not drag!

Even before I go outside, my first clue to topsy-turvy weather are my lips. In one night alone they crack, peel and harden (Is it sad the first thing I thought about was the Pokemon, Kakuna???). Nothing fixes them and I have to wear Aquaphor like a second skin to keep them from bleeding. I slather on C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Tint and it not only protects my lips but repairs them as well! It is a life-saver at work (the climbing gym is not ventilated and the massive amount of hand chalk zaps all moisture as well). The tints come in different colors but there is very little difference between them. However, the lighter color (Magenta Mint) seems brighter when on. The balm is very sticky but does not budge. It is also amazingly shiny and I do not need a lot to coat my lips. By the way, it smells and TASTES awesome. Most of the time I am licking this stuff right off. Beware, there is a bitter aftertaste!

A lot of these favorites are part of my regular routine. I just re-kindled my love for them in new ways!

Nail Art: Plaid

I love plaid. It is my favorite. Anyone who knows me knows I wear  too much plaid.

I played around with the design before but could not get it right.

I really like how these came out: the color scheme, the lines, the shadows, everything! I think plaid especially works well for shorter nails!

I used 2 coats Sephora by OPI “Ms. Can’t Be Wrong” as my base.

I alternated between Sephora by OPI “Go My Own Way”Color Club “Poptastic”, and Essie “No Place Like Chrome for the plaid design.

I may try my hand at a tutorial for this…I really really really like how this came out, and it will help me remember how to do it! 😀

This was my submission for Eva‘s nail art challenge. I had so much fun with this!!

I did not have a clear cut vision for this manicure but I love how many colors there are!

Image

I know I watercolored the base with reds and pinks over butter London “Tea with the Queen”.

I used two coats Sephora by OPI Jewelry Top Coat “Be-Claus I Said So”.

I continued with a very dense coat of Milani “Gems”.

After that, I splattered with Sephora by OPI “Metro Chic” and Urban Outfitters “Westside”.
