“Why don’t you find another way to get out of bed?”

I said it is difficult for me to get out of bed. Some mornings I have to “work” my joints into moving.

…

I do not even know how to respond to this comment. It is very specific but I know this person meant everything, in general.

Sometimes I cannot just throw my legs over the edge, sit up then stand.

Please, anyone out there, if you have another way of getting out of bed please tell me.

Maybe I could roll off the bed onto the floor. Theoretically I get out of bed. Then what? If I cannot rise from bed how in the world am I supposed to get off the floor?!

Not to mention, the roll would be difficult on my elbows.

This is the most absurd comment I have ever heard in response to my musings about RA.

I wake up with swelling in the mornings. Some mornings more than others.

If I cannot get out of bed I cannot get out of bed. End of story. There is no “other way”.

I face obstacles like this every day. Barriers that I cannot get around. These are not something I can overcome. They are boundaries.

Do not get me wrong. I have found many creative and interesting ways to get around these limitations but some things I cannot help.

For example:

  • Using silverware
  • Writing
  • Brushing my teeth

Looking at the list I realize for everything except for writing I have actually found ways to get around the conventional use.

Regardless.

This is the new reality.

Part Two contains my personal reaction.

“But you don’t look sick…”

The silver lining. The very vain silver lining: I don’t look sick!

The visible symptoms would be side-effects of the medications I am on:

  • I bloat on prednisone
  • My hair thins, loses its shine, and falls out on methotrexate
  • If I forget to take my painkillers I pale
  • I break out like mad
  • My eyelashes fall out

The list is extensive.

So is my beauty/skincare regime and so is my diet.

I wrote a couple of posts on my skincare regime earlier. I am very proud of my skincare.

It is nice to know that something in that line-up is working!

After all, if I did not follow it to a tee, I would look very unwell.

Part One explains why this comment is not ok.

Part Two contains my reaction.

pain, rheumatoid arthritis, rock-climbing

I know I have physical limitations.

Sometimes:

I cannot pick up my cat.

I cannot carry the ceramic dog bowls.

I sit on the floor and cannot get up…

Let me preface by saying I climbed today after work. YAY! I rock-climbed after almost two months! Serious YAY!!!!

I climbed two climbs. I sat down to put my shoes on for the third climb and I got stuck. I could not roll over and get up. I tried to use a floor anchor to pull myself up and ended up doing a somersault. It was very comical.

Red flashing lights: MONICA! YOU ARE DONE FOR THE NIGHT. DO NOT CLIMB ANYMORE! STOP! STOP! STOP!

If I am stuck on the floor and cannot get up on my own I should not climb. For that matter, I should not do anything at all.

The best course of action was to stop.

Instead, I decided to hop on the climb that I knew was well out of my range for the night. I might have actually said: “What is the worst that can happen?”

…

I did not complete the climb and I tweaked my hip and knee.

Whoops.

My doctor, my friends, and my dad always tell me I should take better care of myself. I get in trouble with my doctor because I know what the consequences are.

I amaze myself. Generally, I am a very calculated person. I never do anything without reason.

I go through periods when I am more careful than usual:

I only take the infusion once a month. If I flare up I can only increase the prednisone. That is not an option.

Everyone is sick. I stay away from them. I cannot afford to get sick.

I am having trouble getting out of bed. Let me rest today and nap a lot.

Then

I go through periods when I do things I am not supposed to and I honestly have no good reason for it:

Maybe this time will be different.

Maybe I am daring my body to break down.

Maybe I am just angry.

When will I learn?

(Maybe I should start a “Dumb Sh*t Monica Does” Series…I definitely have enough material for that. Hah!)

“…but you don’t look sick!”

I struggle with my physical limitations but I also struggle with the new and unfamiliar mental strain.

The thoughtlessness behind this comment always reminds me of the demons lurking at the back of my mind:

How much does the disease actually affect me?

vs.

How much does stress or over-though affect me?

(These ideas will come up again in another series)

I am battling an invisible illness. Everyone bases their opinions, ideas, and plans of action on how I feel.

Maybe I cannot brush my teeth or pick up my pets because I am more stressed. After all, the mind is a very powerful tool.

But it is not powerful enough to create an entire disease, right?

An over-active imagination cannot allow my immune system to destroy the cartilage around my joints, right?

…Right?

And when people say this and suspend belief at their convenience, I realize no one sees what I am going through.

I feel alone.

I feel like a hypochondriac.

Part One conveys why this comment is not ok to say.

Part Three contains the silver lining.

“But you don’t look sick!”

Thank you?

I am glad I am not a walking billboard for the disease.  I am relieved there is no huge neon sign above my head flashing “PERSON WITH RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS RIGHT HERE!”

I know people mean this as a compliment. Unfortunately, this comment bothers me the most.

It alludes to the fact people may not believe I am truly ill. The misconception remains that most illnesses have outward symptoms.

That is not the case with RA.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a silent illness. It is an inflammatory disease that affects the cartilage around the joints. It also affects other organs and systems in the body. Generally, there are no visible signs of the disease.

So, people with RA do not look ill.

In the beginning people are concerned, after all, they know it is a disease and it is chronic. That much they understand. As time passes, the people who were most concerned are also the people who get the most annoyed.

They think:

‘She is probably fine’

‘She is making excuses’

‘It’s all in her mind’

‘It’s probably just stress’

This one thought, that is meant to sound supportive, is the gate-way to more misguided ideas of what it is like to have this disease.

It allows people to suspend belief when most convenient. They choose not to care when it suits them. They are able to place blame on the sick person because they do not understand the nature of the disease.

Part Two explains my personal feelings on this comment.

Part Three contains “the silver lining”.

Dumb Sh*t People Say Series (RA Edition) – Introduction

“Excuse me, do you have any vegetarian patty options?”

“Uhm…we have buffalo!”

Sarah, my best friend from university, and I looked at each other. Don’t get us wrong, we were only college students, but we were pretty sure that buffalo came from an animal and was not in fact a vegetarian burger option.

I sat for my Orencia infusion this month and we shared stories about all the odd and downright stupid things people say to us. As I sat there, listening to the other women’s stories I realized that I had enough material to start a “Shit People Say” series on my blog.

I know I am going to offend a ton of people but I am totally okay with this. It makes me so angry that people think it is alright to say some of the things they say.

For every crazy comment I am going to reply in a post, hopefully a comical one and one that helps people understand why comments like that make absolutely no sense.

Hopefully, they will also understand why I do not take to these comments well.

depression, flare, rheumatoid arthritis

The last few days were rough for me. I am not dealing with a flare but somebody told me something that hit me hard.

I spiraled pretty badly and I am trying to regain my composure. It took all of my energy to continue with the 31 day nail challenge because I no longer feel motivated to do anything.

Someone from work told me that nobody wants to rock-climb or hang out with me anymore because they all think that they have to make special allowances for the arthritis. I thought I had made it clear that I do not need any help and if I do, I will ask for it. I have become a lot more creative to overcome any disabilities. I very rarely ask for help and never use the RA as an excuse to not complete a work task.

Initially, I did not think too much of it. I am sure it came out in a different way than was meant, but recently I notice it is true.

People no longer invite me on climbing trips, yet still talk about them in front of me. Everyone makes excuses to not climb with me indoors. People always tell me the classic “I am busy for the next few weeks” whenever I reach out to hang out.

I feel like a fool. There are so many times that I can reach out before I look like an idiot.

The only times I manage to socialize with my co-workers is when I just push my presence on them and invite myself. That is not good any way around. If they wanted me to join, they would ask. I mean, I am standing right there.

I have not climbed in almost three weeks and I have no plans to climb in the future.

I am still very wary of who I tell about my disease. No more than 20 people know.  I would not have told them at work but each employee has to pass a drug test.  I had to tell them about my condition.

What I realized is I became sloppy about what I say.

I was always a closed book. I rarely let people into my life and I rarely talked about my problems.

People act like they cared about my well-being so I divulge more information on my condition.

That is interpreted as: I whine too much and am not trying hard enough to change my situation.

Oh, okay.

Let me just exercise a little more and maybe my joints will get stronger.

Please tell me again how I should just lower my methotrexate dose so that I feel less lethargic and nauseous.

Why can’t I just increase my prednisone dose to 15mg so that I can function?

Why don’t I just take more pain-killers?

Why don’t I try harder to make my condition less controlling?

What symptoms? You seem ok to me…

I am tired of explaining my condition to people who do not care enough to understand. Every time I try, people form even lower opinions of me.

When I closed myself off from people: I worked hard, I spoke when spoken to, my opinions were held in high regard.

I need to go back to that.
