Flashback Friday: That Time Affie Trotted Off

Tags

, , ,

I grew it up in a gorgeous wooded neighborhood. It was a protected area where homeowners could only expand their homes vertically and not horizontally so they wouldn’t disturb the forest. Because of this, the houses were generally small with large, untouched yards wrapped around them. Fun fact: One was built by Andrew Lloyd Wright and remained in his family!

I know it sounds like I grew up in a quiet rural environment but actually I lived in the suburbs of Washington DC! The city and it’s neighboring counties took their environment seriously.

The surrounding streets connected through loops and general roundabouts with multiple outlets to the “main road”. This kind of made us one big happy neighboorhood, even if we didn’t know everyone who lived in the gorgeous 50 and 60 style houses.

Mine was not small but it was one story with a basement. It looked it, though, because of the vast garden. I was lucky that we had such an expansive yard. I had a lot of room to play and the dogs had plenty of space to run.

When we got Affie (our first dog) we decided to take advantage of this great big space and put in an invisible fence. I know it is a controversial topic but we thought it was a great idea because the dog had unblocked access to the entire property.

It was perfect for the Affie and Saachi (our second dog). They ran around all day (hours upon hours) as if they were farm animals and especially loved to trot next to other people walking their pets.

In retrospect, this is probably why our pets are so aloof and self reliant. They preferred the outdoors and were not interested in playing fetch or Frisbee.

We liked to keep Affie’s fur short. It matted easily and I couldn’t keep up with the grooming. But, during late Fall, early winter we grew her hair out so she could stay outside and not freeze her little doggie butt.

The problem with this, we found out, was she would disregard her fence collar. We didn’t keep the shock too high but it was high enough that we thought she could feel it through inches of fur. Even now, we’re not convinced that she didn’t feel it.

Affie Chain - 2006

One weekday while I was at school a neighbor from three “neighborhoods” away rang our doorbell and handed Affie over to my father.

“We found her marching along the road!” she explained. My father was flabbergasted. He didn’t know the woman but thankfully she recognized Affie from when she walked her own dogs.

I don’t know how this lady caught this nutty dog but I have the upmost respect for her. Affie never came when she was called and played chase with anyone who looked at her.

Now, this is probably a good time to mention we checked on the dogs when they were outside but since they had full use of the property (front and back of the house) we never worried too much if we couldn’t see them. They explored every inch of the yard (and remember I mentioned it was very wooded) so we just assumed they were in some cranny inaccessible to us.

The woman was kind enough to remove Affie’s collar and it was still buzzing when she handed it over. She laughed “I can’t believe she didn’t feel it!”

We couldn’t believe it either.

After that, we checked on Affie more frequently and I did catch her making a break for freedom a couple of times. I think she chose to ignore the zap to continue her carefree exploratory existence outside of her usual four corners.

I love intricate nail art as much as the next enthusiast but sometimes I crave the simplicity of one or two complementary colors. These pink nails are exactly that and I have to say I adore them. It’s been a while since I did delicate nails, let alone uncomplicated ones so these feel like a breath of fresh air.

I kind of went overboard with this festive nail lok but I kind of love how it turned out. I just wish my camera picked up the colors a bit better. I had to add contrast while editing the photo because I couldn’t see the snowflakes too well.

I thought it was was fitting to use a holiday stamper for this look so I used my new Born Pretty Store dark festive stamper. I was totally drawn to this one because of the dark blue and gold scheme and loved the shimmery navy stamper head. Though, I have to admit I am no longer used to opaque squishy stampers. I prefer my clear one since I can see exactly where I place the image on my nail. This being said, this new one picked up the images nicely and transferred them well to the nail surface but I think I will reserve it for marbling and reverse stamping.

I hope you like this look as much as I do! I don’t usually do multiple stampings since I think one layer looks elegant enough but I just felt like more was more is more in this case!

Easy as a Cranberry Mocha Festive Eye Look || Video

This look has been puttering around in my head for a while but I think it’s perfect for this time of year. It’s dark, moody and festive. Winter color schemes are generally very cool which don’t work particularly well with my skin so I am thrilled I have a look that is warm-toned.

My only pet peeve is I had to dig into multiple eye shadow palettes. I can create something extremely similar with the very pigmented and blendable Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette but I didn’t want to feature it again so close to the last makeup (Easy as Pumpkin Pie eye look linked here). Though, I don’t think people would mind too much. After all, it shows I use the palette frequently, right? I’m also getting into a little pickle because my favorite palettes are also limited edition and no longer available. It’s a fine line isn’t it!

Now that I’ve rambled on about random slightly unrelated things let’s get into the video. It is simple, easy and very arthritis-friendly! And hey, if you try out this look let me know send me a Tweet so I can see it (is ‘tweet’ capitalized??).

A Little Autumnal Waterfall | Nail Art

I never quite know whether to feature waterfall nail art as arthritis-friendly. It is super simple, easy and forgiving…But, it can strain my wrists. The last time I did this my wrist felt like it was on fire (and I was not in flare). I felt a bit better while doing today’s look but I still found difficulty in manipulating the brush. Hmmm…I guess not all easy techniques are quote unquote RA-friendly!

I do have to apologize about my links lately. I am on a huge no-buy right now and paring down my nail polish collection. I feel way less claustrophobic but this process leaves me with utterly discontinued polishes. I’m sure you are all very resourceful and have or can find shades similar to the ones I use!

I hope you like today’s nails. I fished out one of my favorite polishes ever (it is liquid gold for me — do you remember Sephora by OPI???). I rarely use SOPI polishes because I don’t want to run out of them even though I am leaning dangerously close to too-gunky-to-save formulas. That’s okay, I can just put them on a shelf and stare at them, right?

I OVERSLEPT! 5 Minute Easy, Healthy Face Makeup || Video

…In probably less than five minutes. I haven’t felt well this month/IV med cycle. “Not well” as in I can easily sleep 11+ hours every day. I picked up a bug at school and I just feel knackered. When your immune system is suppressed even the sniffles takes a toll.

Before RA, I could hit the road without even running a comb through my hair. Now, I look just as ill as I feel (thanks autoimmune condition!) but when I sleep through my usual morning routine I have a safety look that only takes a few minutes!

I hope you enjoy the video!

A Very RA Thanksgiving

https://www.adlibbing.org/2017/11/22/thanksgiving-2/?hvid=55oSzx

I am grateful…

…I can still work, even if it is only part-time.

…I still have full mental capability

…I found blogging/vlogging

…I can still walk (sometimes)

…I can still rock-climb (occasionally)

…I can still care for my pets

…I can afford private insurance

& it covers all my specialists/PTs/rehabs

…for continuity of care and access to the best doctors

…for access to all my meds

…for never having trouble filling a prescription

& never been treated as an addict or drug seeker

…for my family who supports me through the harder times

& those who try to understand what I am going through

…for not bothering with the ones who don’t

Rheumatoid Arthritis changed my life. Maybe not for the better and probably for the worse but, it’s made me so much more thankful for the little things I took for granted before it.
