Going into this month, I thought I would re-create the inscription on the Ring of Power from Lord of the Rings. Unfortunately, RA got in the way so I racked my brain for another idea. I still wanted to do Lord of the Rings but I needed a RA-friendly nail art to go with it.

Distressed nails are one of the perfect RA-friendly nail art techniques! But, what part of Lord of the Rings would the distressed vibe represent? …Fangorn Forest!

The Forest of Fangorn is completely overrun by trees, moss, roots, branches and magic. The forest houses some of the oldest magic of that world. Many who venture into this forest rarely find their way out.

But, I wanted to touch on the magical element as well so I did a accent water-marble. The fireside stories of Fangorn hint at an angry, dark past but it has a whimsical side as well.

I kind of really love this. I have a feeling I totally over thought this manicure’s significance but I was inspired, I guess!

I hope you like it, too!

31DC2014 - September 24: Inspired by a Book | The Rite of Aging…EarlyI used 2 coats of Sephora by OPI Metro Chic as my base.

The other polishes I used:

  • Sephora by OPI It’s Totally Karma, 212-Sephora
  • Milani Dark Coffee
  • Revlon Gel Envy High Stakes

All these polishes marbled beautifully, including “212-” which is a glitter-y brown!

I sealed the marble with my favorite INM Northern Lights (Silver).

31DC2014 – September 23: Inspired by a Movie

#31DC2014, acrylic paint, freehand, Milani, Nail Art

I am debating whether I should forgo part of the challenge. I am really not feeling well but I want to complete the challenge but then again I do not want to post haphazard work. But…I am trying so…we’ll see.

I recently re-watched The Devil Wears Prada. I love this movie. I own this movie. I am such a chick flick fan it is kind of funny sometimes.

The only problem with re-creating the DVD cover is the freehand. We all know my freehand really needs work. I think I did okay, though, I kind of wish I had not cut my nails short just yet.

I hope you like it, please go easy on me! Sorry for the subpar photo, my skin did not want to work the white polish!

31DC2014 - September 23: Inspired by a MovieI used Milani Color Statement Spotlight White as my base.

I used red and black acrylic paint for the detailing.

#31DC2014, Barry M, freehand, INM, Milani, Nail Art, rafriendlynailart, Sephora by OPI, splatter

I am really struggling to keep on point with this challenge. The longer I am off the Orencia the more sick I feel. I will have a post on this later.

Today’s prompt is “Inspired by a Song”. Well, the one song I hear on the radio, all.the.time. (including 3 stations at the same time) is Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off”. I am going to tell you right now, I am not a Taylor Swift fan. I like a couple of her hit songs but in general I do not like her. Actually, I really dislike this song. Read on to find out why I chose it!

When I heard “Shake it Off” I immediately thought splatter-paint, which so happens to be VERY RA-friendly!

Yes, I went there. I did try to incorporate part of the song by going with a usually not so likable color combination: teal/green and purple! (I personally love it!)

I hope you like it!

31DC2014 - September 22: Inspired by a Song | The Rite of Aging…Early

I alternated Barry M GNP 14/Key Lime and Sephora by OPI Domestic Goddess as my base.

I splattered with the Barry M GNP 14/Key Lime, MNP 10/Cancun, Sephora by OPI Domestic Goddess and Milani Vivid Violet.

I topped everything with INM Northern Lights (Silver). It smeared the design a little but with splatter I guess that is ok. I’ve run out of Seche Vite. I could buy it but I am waiting on a shipment from HauteLook. I bought 3 when they were on sale for $5 each!

31DC2014 – September 21: Inspired by a Color

#31DC2014, American Apparel, Barry M, freehand, marbling, MoYou London, Mundo de Unas, Nail Art, Pop Beauty, stamping

I got my new Mundo de Unas stamping polishes in the mail and wanted to try out the blue so I built the color palette around that one polish. That falls under “inspired by a color”, right?

I wanted to water-marble again and I was so happy I did! It looked like a true water marble! Now, if I could only get them in the same direction!

The type of polishes I use really make a difference. I know Sammy from the Nailasaurus typically uses Barry M polishes so I gave mine a try. Wow. They work so well! True marbling is not as RA-friendly as messy marbling since it requires more precision. I only did my middle and ring nails because my fingers and wrists are flared.

I hope you like it!

31DC2014 - September 21: Inspired by a Color | The Rite of Aging…EarlyI used 3 coats of American Apparel Parakeet as my base.

I marbled with Orly Bonder, Barry M GNP 14/Key Lime, MNP 10/Cancun, and Pop Beauty Pacific Hoot (unfortunately, Pacific Hoot got kind of eaten up when I made the rings). I sealed the designs with Seche Vite before applying a generous coat of INM Northern Lights (Silver).

I stamped with MoYou London plate 04 from the Princess collection and Mundo de Unas stamping polish 4/Blue.

31DC2014 – September 20: Water Marbles

#31DC2014, Barry M, China Glaze, freehand, INM, marbling, Milani, Nail Art, Sephora by OPI, watercolor

I was slightly worried about today’s prompt. My last few water-marbling attempts were hardcore fails. For that matter, when was the last time I even posted one on the blog?

I racked my brains and polishes to find the ones I remember worked best. Generally those were the Milani creams and Sephora by OPIs. I matched up a couple of the S-OPIs and built the color palette from there.

I am pretty pleased with the final result. I combined a water-color base with a water-marble on top. I think it is kind of funny I ended up with a gradient, ombre style across my hand. Hey, at least they all ended up in the same direction!

I hope you like it!

DSCF0971_fotorI used 2 coats of Milani Fast Fuchsia as my base. I sealed the water-colored design with a generous coat of INM Northern Lights – Gold before continuing with the marble.

Polishes used for water-color:

  • Barry M MNP 9/Rhossili, GNP 8/Grapefruit
  • China Glaze Fuchsia

Polishes used for water-marble:

  • Sephora by OPI Domestic Goddess, Caffeine Fix

#31DC2014, American Apparel, Barry M, freehand, galaxy, INM, Mundo de Unas, Nail Art, Pahlish, stamping, Wet n Wild, Zoya

I decided to for-go yesterday’s half moons prompt. I do not like half moons and I do not like how they look. They’re just not my thing and I think that’s okay!

However, I do love galaxy nail art! It is surprisingly RA-friendly. It is a bunch of sponging and layers and it does not have to be perfect.

I’ve tried cool-colored galaxies, I’ve tried multi-colored galaxies so today I tried warm-colored galaxies. I was so pleased I could use my new Pahlish and Mundo de Unas polishes!

I hope you like it!

31DC2014 - September 19: Galaxies | The Rite of Aging…EarlyI used 3 coats of Pahlish Fevers and Mirrors as my base.

Other polishes:

  • Zoya Goldie
  • American Apparel Neon Red
  • Wet n Wild Burgandy Frost
  • Barry M Matte MNP 9/Rhossili
  • INM Northern Lights – Gold

I stamped with Bundle Monster plate BM 311 and Mundo de Unas stamping polish 41-Copper.

Perfect timing! “All that is gold does not glitter”…but let’s face it, pirates like their treasure shiny. Initially I wanted to re-create my 31DC2013 – Inspired by Eye Makeup I Love manicure (linked here) but nearly forgot dragons were not the theme…Treasure-hunting was so I swapped the giant reptile for a full wooden chest.

I kind of love how this came out, especially the gradient base, the yellow really makes the gold pile kind of glow! I hope you like it too!

31DC2014 - September 17 - GlitterA list of the polishes:

  • Color Club Wham! Pow!, Almost Famous
  • Zoya Goldie
  • Sephora by OPI 212-Sephora
  • Revlon Parfumerie Fresh Linen
  • Yellow, red, brown acrylic paint

A list of the tools:

  • makeup sponge
  • assorted artist’s brushes
