Water decals purchased by me.

The Born Pretty Store Christmas decals are my absolute favorite and I purchase them every October. This year was no exception and I paid special attention to the snowmen  and reindeer who are absolutely adorable.

Today’s nail art is fashioned after a snow globe nail art I did two years ago (linked here) except this time I managed the look a little better.

I am on the fence with this one because I like last year’s better.

Maybe I shouldn’t have chosen pink and used a clear top coat for the layers? I do like it but something about this one isn’t quite right. I actually considered not even posting it but it took me so long I just had to! And, I mean, look at those smiling faces!

I hope you like it!

#31DC2015 – On Wednesdays We Wear Pink Nail Art

I think I mixed up the days/prompts. I thought today was inspired by a book so I posted my Lord of the Rings nail art and then realized today was actually inspired by a movie so I am posting this now and fixing my Inlinkz.

I immediately fell back to Lord of the Rings today but I wanted to do something different. While I was on Netflix Mean Girls popped up on my queue and it hit me!: today is Wednesday AND the movie prompt for the 31 Day Challenge. How perfect.

Mean Girls will always hold sentimental value for me. I was not bullied in school but the history behind the movie has a lot of well, history, for me! I giggle whenever I watch the movie and I love watching it with old friends.

Funny story: I saw the woman who plays Cady’s (Lindsay Lohan) mother as Elphaba in the NYC revival of Wicked so I thought it was fitting to use ‘Popular’ from the Deborah Lippmann Wicked collection in today’s look!

#31DC2015 – Glitter Gradient Nail Art

For today’s glitter prompt I went with an oldie but a goodie: a simple gradient. I have actually done this look before but on serious nail nubs. Can we talk really quickly about my nail length? I always always always since the beginning of my time had short nails. It was impossible to wear long nails because of rock-climbing and my vet tech work. I was so used to short nubs even going a little longer felt strange and I always thought my nails would break. As my blogging progressed I started favoring longer nails (I know they are still considered short but for me these have serious length!) I can still climb and work but how times have changed. What’s next? Changing my nail shape??

Many moons ago I did a Galapagos-inspired look for the FIFA World Cup challenge (linked here)! I was trying out my new light box and the photos were horrendous! I was completely bummed as the actual nail art came out really nicely! I always wanted to re-try it for better pictures…except, I didn’t realize how DIFFICULT this look was to photograph! I think there was just too much going on with all the different colors and stamping, etc. I tried my best and still  have to say I love what I came up with.

I hope you do too!

#OMD3NAILS - Ocean Watercolor and Stamping Nail Art | The Rite of AgingBase: Milani Color Statement Blue Print (I have to say I am not particularly pleased with the brand’s new polishes especially when compared to the old ones…)

Watercolor: Sephora by OPI Go My Own Way, Sally Hansen Slick Black, Blue My Mind, Zoya Crystal, Yara, Opal, Deborah Lippmann Mermaid’s Dream, Essie No Place Like Chrome, Milani Power Periwinkle

Stamping: Color Club On the Rocks, MoYou London plate SAILOR 08

Striping Tape and Glitter Nail Art

Striping tape rarely makes it on to the blog (actually, for that matter, neither does negative space); but, last night, I had a dream about a glitter gradient peeking out from underneath a black layer. I recently noticed Instagrammers sponging over striping tape and I wanted to give it a try. It took longer to build up the color but it minimized pooling under the tape.

Striping tape is so not good for the OCD part of my personality. I think I did a pretty good job of keeping the stripes straight per nail but I was re-applying tape pieces for over an hour! On top of that, it irked me the nails were not the same. I wouldn’t mind so much if each nail was different but they were supposed to be the same so in my mind it looked messy. I know I am being super picky and hard on myself but this was everything I was thinking during the process!

So, what was the take-away? This was so not RA-friendly nail art! — Thankfully, I took a lot of Vicodin for my back and I was on the full steam nail art train!

That being said, I AM PROUD OF MYSELF. Given my complete inexperience with taping this came out pretty well…I almost stopped at the glitter gradient but I decided to go whole hog. I will definitely re-visit this simple gradient when I need a more RA-friendly option.

I absolutely love love LOVE how the index finger came out. I tried to fashion the other nails after it but that did not quite happen.

What do you think of striping tape? Yay or nay? If you are a fan of the technique, does it get easier or more enjoyable?

Subtle Glitter Gradient | The Rite of Aging

Negative Space Striping Tape Nail Art | The Rite of AgingI started with one sheer coat of Essie Mademoiselle.

I sponged Deborah Lippman Happy Birthday on the tips. Remember that time I only made a frivolous Sephora online purchase just to get hold of this 100-point perk? Yeah…don’t judge me! I evened the surface with a generous coat of Seche Vite.

I used striping tape, a makeup sponge and Wet n Wild Black Creme for the stripes.

I decided to go with something simple for the pink and aqua prompt. I own ONE aqua polish and I received it is a sample size that was part of a Sephora Favorites collection. I making gradients with Mermaid’s Dream. It looks really nice on nail tips.

I finally got my photo light to work!! Yay! Now I just have to lower my pain levels.

I hope you like my simple gradient!

Pink and Aqua gradient | The Rite of AgingI started with two coats of Color Club Poptastic and one coat of Deborah Lippmann Popular as my base.

I used a makeup sponge Deborah Lippmann Popular and Mermaid’s Dream for the gradient.

SIMPLES Challenge – Week 11: Gradients

I am a couple weeks late on Week 11’s SIMPLES prompt because I was not feeling particularly gradient-inspired. Tonight, I was itching to paint my nails but lacked inspiration. Sitting down in front of my supplies, I wanted to sugar-spin or splatter but could not get on board with the color combinations so I flipped through my new Pueen plates.

I recently purchased the Love Elements collection from Amazon.com and I’m so excited to use them. The designs are super cute and versatile! The theme may be “love” but they are not overtly romantic or girly. I did not read the description properly so I was pleasantly surprised the collection comes with a storage binder to keep the plates all in one place. I immediately played around with them when they arrived last week (my stamping was pretty abysmal and not fit for show) and from the designs they appear really good quality and apply very crisp. They make my amateur stamping look pro!

When I saw the leaves, I knew I had to do a green gradient. I’ve been on a green kick lately but I have to admit these nail polishes were very difficult to sponge. Even after many layers, I still saw a very severe demarcation line between the colors. It’s a shame because these colors look really good together. From afar the leaves look really nice but when I applied top coat they smeared a little bit! Thankfully, in person, it is not that noticeable.

I hope you like it!

simples week 11: gradientsI started with two coats of Milani Spotlight White as my base.

I used a makeup sponge, Milani Spotlight White, Barry M Key Lime,  and Deborah Lippmann Defying Gravity.

I stamped with Pueen plate Pueen-33 and Konad Special Polish in Black.
