#31DC2015 – Sweeney Todd Sugarspun and Splatter Nail Art

RA-friendly nail art.

Today’s nail art was so much fun! I sugar-spun (my favorite) and splattered with no cleanup!

Today’s prompt was “inspired by a song” so I chose my favorite Broadway musical Sweeney Todd. It is the grossest, most intense musicals I have ever seen but the music is phenomenal.

If you are unfamiliar with Sweeney Todd the basic plot of the story is he is a wrongfully accused barber who returns to London to take revenge on the people who imprisoned him. He rents a room above a woman’s (Mrs. Lovett) pie shop. Todd opens his barber shop and slits the throats of his clients. He then sends their bodies through a meat grinder which Mrs. Lovett uses for her pies. Her shop becomes very popular yet nobody knows they are participating in cannibalism!

Gross, right?

I took inspiration from the CD cover art with the sugar-spin mimicking the ground flesh Todd served to his customers.

I hope you like it! I do!

I almost never want to watermarble with bright colors again until I get my new camera  because this was a bear to photograph! I am beyond annoyed because I really loved how this marble came out and I was looking forward to this prompt since I personally love water marbling!

I did my best to get the marble to show up but I know better pictures were possible. Hope you like it anyways!

A Purple and Green RA-friendly Waterfall

It has been one of those weeks. I was unmotivated, lethargic, but extremely restless. Half the time, I tried one of the many nail ideas flitting through my head but none of them looked right; the other half I just couldn’t bring myself to even try. Do you ever have those days? Weeks? Months, maybe? I wouldn’t call it depression, I thought it was more of a flare. My eyes were more dry than usual, the skin on my lips flaked off and I was uncharacteristically fatigued (even though my joint pain was minimal).

Regardless, I sat down and pushed through this strange phase and went with a quick, RA-friendly waterfall look. I had no particular feelings for this nail art (ah, motivation) but I did like how it came out. I hope you do too!

Oh. Mon. Dieu. I am finally caught up! I knocked out THREE prompts! Unfortunately, today, my phone camera decided to bring on it’s attitude full on and my photos are less than ideal…

I am not the biggest lipstick fan. I have well over 20 lip balms, sticks, tinted balms, glosses, and hybrids in nudes and light pinks and rarely wear them! There are three, however, I wear more than the others and those are the YSL glossy lip tints and Chanel Coco Rouge Shines. I would always rather spend money on something I wear more often than something that gets shoved into the back of the cupboard!

I was so excited for this manicure…it came out the way I wanted!…Except..it looks more like blood than melted lipstick…whoops…Does that ever happen to you? Everything turns out EXACTLY the way you imagined it but doesn’t look the way you thought it would?

Watercolor Distressed Nail Art

Have you ever had those moments when you just hate on your dominant hand nails? For the most part I love the nails on my left hand. I don’t have to do a lot to them to keep them neat and in shape…but today they just look horrid with nail polish on. I am so tempted to take EVERYTHING off because I can’t even handle it right now. This art did take me a boatload of time; specifically, the entire Bachelor finale and after the final rose episode, so maybe I’ll keep it on.

I love how the final result came out, though, but it looks hideous against gross nails. Know what I mean?

I wanted to try this watercolor nail art again with pinks, purples and blues. I really like messing with a look until I have it “just right” without it looking bulky or manipulated. Thinning the polish with acetone ensures neither of those happen! I think the watercolor distressed look is really RA-friendly but I would necessarily classify this look as such.

The polishes I used definitely worked differently than the ones I used in the green plaid (linked here) because I think they were a lot thicker. This didn’t make them harder to work with but definitely created a different effect.

I sealed everything with Seche Vite but everything still finished sort of matte! I hope you like it!

Watercolor Distressed Plaid | The Rite of Aging

DSCF4413_fotorFor this look I started with Formula X for Sephora Thrilling as my base.

I used acetone, a square brush and detail brush and the following polishes

  • Pahlish Le Bijou de Roi
  • Milani Vivid Violet, Fast Fuchsia
  • Pop Beauty Pacific Hoot
  • Color Club Warhol
  • Sephora by OPI Domestic Goddess

Halloween Nail Art Challenge – Day 1: Classic Orange & Black

Check the sidebar for more information.

Whee!! Today is the first day of the Challenge Your Nail Art group’s Halloween Challenge. First, a little information on the group. The group was started by the wonderful Jessica who runs the blog Be Happy and Buy Polish. Every few months Jessica puts together prompts (with input from the group!) and inlinkz codes for short, bite-size challenges. There are never more than four daily prompts but each theme is different and usually touches on the time of year. What I especially love about these challenges is how unique each prompt is! And even though they are different, I can take it any direction I want. Perfect! But be warned, the link-ups are only open for 24 hours! Mwahahaha. (That was my poor attempt at Halloween humor…)

Moving right on past that…

I hope you like my classic orange & black manicure. I cheated a little since I did not do “nail art”, per say, but as you know, I am not all that into Halloween so I usually feel pretty uninspired in this department! But hey, I will take any excuse to use my Formula X Halloween topper during this time of the year!

Halloween Nail Art Challenge - Orange & Black | The Rite of Aging EarlyI used 2 coats of Milani Spotlight White and 2 coats of Revlon Parfumerie Fresh Linen as my base.

I used a sponge-tip eyeshadow applicator with Formula X by Sephora Bombshell at the cuticles.

Hi, my name is Monica and I have RA.

Don’t forget to check out the awesome manicures below!

Nail Art: Simple Halloween

Born Pretty Store, Formula X Sephora, Glisten & Glow, Halloween, Nail Art, Seche Vite, Sephora by OPI

Except for challenges, I have not done any Halloween-inspired manicures this year. Last year, around this time, Sephora launched their new Formula X polish collection. There were so many options and I managed to walk away with one: Bombshell. Bombshell was a glitter topper from the Explosives collection. I had and still do not have any similar polish.

I did not know this at the time, but they discontinued this one shade. I am not sure if it was always limited edition though I am pretty sure it was not. Regardless, I am glad I got my hands on it.

I have been totally uninspired in the nail art region, the last few days so I opted for water decals. Unfortunately, this Born Pretty decal would not sit still on my nail, even after it dried, and top coat just wrecked it. In person, at the very least, I could not really tell there was supposed to be a pumpkin and the ghost was severed in half…

I considered not even posting this manicure but I wanted to show off the glitter. FYI, this is ONE coat…That is how much you get with one brush load (I even had to scrape off a little in the bottle). I used the dab technique for even coverage but I did not have to double-dip! Better yet, I did not have to fish for the large pieces! I have not tried any of the other Explosives but if they are similar to Bombshell I would highly recommend them!

I hope you like it….and please excuse my index finger.

Halloween Glitter Topper | The Rite of AgingI started with 2 coats of Sephora by OPI Metro Chic and 1 coat of Formula X by Sephora Bombshell as my base. Just look at how dense that glitter is!

The decal is from the Born Pretty Store. I usually have trouble with smearing regardless of which topcoat I use but today was particularly bad. I used Glisten and Glow HK Girl Fast Dry Top Coat and experienced total severing of this decal. I do not know how much of it was the top coat or the decal since the decal was not sitting still anyways. However, I have never had as much disaster with Seche Vite. Thoughts?
