Blame it on the Prednisone

This post was inspired by an article I read on RheumatoidArthritis.net. I cannot believe I haven’t yet written about my experiences with prednisone as (no joke) the only sentence that comes out of my mouth on a daily basis is “it’s the prednisone”. The article is linked here.

Anxiety attacks? Blame it on the prednisone.

Depression? Blame it on the prednisone.

Paranoia? Blame it on the prednisone!

And it begins…

More often than not I curse my reliance on prednisone. It is the first medication I ever took for Rheumatoid Arthritis. During my first flare I could not get out of bed yet this little bitter-tasting pill at a hefty 15mg dose took down inflammation in three days. Who knew how long I would have been bed-ridden without it.

A little pill taken once a day that nicks inflammation at the source? Sign me up!…Oh wait…The list of side-effects is miles long and more often than not I confuse RA symptoms with prednisone side-effects. I am one of the few who takes prednisone daily and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. This means I have no choice but to weather the good and bad that comes with this “magic” medicine.

I experimented with different doses which ranged from 8mg to 15mg over the past four years. It was the most effective drug I took. I loved it. I hated it even more. I increased as needed and decreased at a snail pace.

Prednisone is a funny little drug. Its human dependancy rivals that of addictive designer drugs. Prednisone messes with the brain. I can experience moments of inexplicable rage and others of intense sadness; feelings I have never experienced at such magnitude. Forget a dose. Forget about it. I do not recognize myself (not to mention the havoc it wreaks on vital organs).

For my own sanity (and the safety of others) I rarely increase above 12mg.

Insomnia? It’s the prednisone.

Bitter taste but intense hunger?

Do you see a pattern?

I tolerate a 10mg daily dose well. A year ago I was on 11 and today I am currently attempting 9. Around eight months ago I tried 9mg and experienced what I can only image was withdrawal and a strange swelling sensation in my spine. Okay, Prednisone, you had me at 10mg.

The higher the dose the worse the side effect. Three years ago when I experienced a bad flare I quickly increased to 13mg per my doctor’s instruction; with it, I experienced my first ever panic attack. I curled up in a ball whimpering  with tears running down my face. I had never experience such anxiety and paranoia. My nerves were on fire and I could not get out of my own head. My four pets tried to sleep with me and I couldn’t share the bed. I shooed them from my bedroom where they stood guard at the door. They couldn’t stay in the room because the walls closed in on me.

Weight gain? Blame it on the prednisone.

Moon face?…

What else could it be?

Whenever I increase the prednisone I experience severe bloating and intense hunger. My appetite increases and with it so does bloating of my face and belly which I have fondly (read: not so fondly) nickname “pred belly”. Within the last six months I gained 12 pounds in my face, stomach and thighs and in most photographs I sported a double chin. I felt larger than life and annoyed at the self-esteem I never thought about but thankfully once I lowered the prednisone dose and started exercising again I shed the excess and looked/felt myself again.

Even with all these grievances, though, would I stop the prednisone? That is the million dollar question and as I type it out I realize I do not know the answer. Yes! Because the cons run longer than pros and No! Because no other medication quite compares.

A Very Barry M Watermarble Nail Art

I was in a watermarble mood today but could not decide on what colors or designs to use!

I practiced with a few different combinations, colors and brands before landing on the one below. Some of the polishes did not behave, some did not work well together or spread properly, and some of the color combinations were just weird! After some trial and error I decided on my trusty Barry Ms which I may or may not have purchased in certain colors just for marbles!

I am pretty pleased with how this look came out but I do want your opinions. Is the holo top coat a little too much? Should I have left well enough alone? What do you think?

Well hello there lovely people!

Today I have a fun blue gradient with the brightest blue cremes in my collection! Just looking at them puts me in a good mood. And, as per usual, I did not leave well enough alone and added some sea creatures to my waves. Thankfully, they came out well and added nicely to the look!

Unfortunately, I completely forgot Why Not stains worse than any other polish in my collection. I used Crystalline Nail Veil but there was still skin that couldn’t avoid the inevitable. I am not really looking forward to taking this look off which is just as well because I love it so much!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Here is another nail art look with the new Class Act polishes from SinfulColors! The word on the nail art streets is SinfulColors polishes watermarble well and in my experience they do; the real question, however, is how well do the demi-mattes marble when mixed with regular cremes? Check out the photo below and draw your own conclusions!

I hope you like it!

#RedCoatTuesday – Pretty Little Liars Finale Nail Art

Yesterday was the Pretty Little Liars season finale and after years of sitting on the edge of our seats with bated breath we found out who ‘A’ was…and did it make sense? NOT AT ALL. I had mixed emotions about the finale. The writers did a fantastic job of throwing the audience off and wrapping everything up in a nice little bow. However, the story was completely riddled with plot holes. Granted, they tried to fit six seasons of stories into 40 minutes but still, there was so much filler during the last few years a lot of the story no longer made sense. The episode ended really abruptly which left me completely dissatisfied because after such a long time they should give them more than a two minute goodbye. All this being said, I will definitely watch the final season in the winter because I’m completely intrigued. Sort of. I think?

For the ongoing #redcoattuesday challenge I decided on a super (I mean REALLY) RA-friendly look. It only took a few minutes and I love the final look.

I don’t have a lot to say on today’s manicure except that I cannot stop dotting on paper! Why not continue the trend on my nails?

I took a quick swatch photo of the base color. I really should wear this on it’s own much more often. It looks great against my skin and it’s the perfect neon without screaming “HI! I’M HERE!”

Kitteh Full Nail Stamping and Water Decals Nail Art

Every time I stamp I want to try the decal thing. As I ready myself to try it: set up my table, pool out the polishes, line up my dotting tools and grab my stampers; I shrug off the feeling and finish with a traditional stamp.

Well…alright. Next time?

There are quite a few challenges taking place in the Instagram world right now and I am picking and choosing which to participate in.

Today’s/yesterday’s (by the time I snapped photos, uploaded and edited them I was too exhausted for words) look combines the #dreamnailschallenge (cats) and #glamnailschallenge (paws).

While it is not too surprising I own multiple paw print and feline stamps, which I accumulated randomly over the last few years, it is surprising how difficult it was to choose the final products.

In the end, I decided on a mix of easy water decals and my Born Pretty Store (BPS) kitty plate. I filled in they eyes with a teal as Sunsilk’s pupils are rimmed with that exact color. This is my first first attempt at full nail stamping decals and I have to say they came out pretty well! Execution could use a little work; I was so upset when I used too much acetone during cleanup and dissolved portions of the decal! No matter, I just need more practice!
