I don’t have a lot to say on today’s manicure except that I cannot stop dotting on paper! Why not continue the trend on my nails?

I hope you like it!

Girly Bits Swatch - Supersonic | The Rite of Aging

I took a quick swatch photo of the base color. I really should wear this on it’s own much more often. It looks great against my skin and it’s the perfect neon without screaming “HI! I’M HERE!”

Instagram has created a TUMBLER MONSTER. After the duochrome tumbler went viral on social media I became curious of the others…and I bought the sunset gradient one. Now, every few weeks, I stalk the website for new additions to the cold and warm drinkware pages.

Alright, so maybe this isn’t new. When I started traveling after college I wanted to collect something to remember my trip. The question was what? Postcards and stamps are cute but ultimately useless. Who is going to want to use either for their proposed purposes since they mail right out of your possession, completely nullifying adding them to your collection in the first place!

When I was little I used to collect little jars of sand from the places my family visited…once again though, cool but impractical.

I dug a little deeper. What could I stockpile that I could use? What do I love more than anything in the world? Coffee. Then it hit me. I drink coffee, hot tea and cocoa almost every day and what do I drink them in?? COFFEE CUPS. Not only can I drink from mugs but I can use them as holders of well, stuff! Literally all my shelves have one or two mugs, some hold my keys, others markers, and some I use to collect pistachio shells (heh!)

Now, back to the point…one afternoon while scrolling through the Starbucks website when I saw the new dog doodle tumbler! No contest. No question. I needed it. I mean, I am pre-freaking-vet and I love dogs. No hesitation. No buyer’s remorse for breaking my no-buy.

When you know you have to have something. You just know. Am I right?

For today’s prompt, I hit a little block. I knew which #mydrink I would use…but I did not know what #mynails I would do. I usually fill my cold drink tumblers with iced tea or water and take them in the car so I considered an Arnold Palmer gradient. However, I was just about to hit the treadmill and didn’t want to sip on iced tea during my workout. Since water is clear it opened up almost every nail art and I decided to pull from the green tennis ball…Hope you like it!

Green Saran-Wrap Nail Art

Well hello there!

Why didn’t I think of cling wrap manicures before?? They are probably the most RA-friendly of all the nail art techniques. I drop the polish right onto the nail and use bubble-wrap (easiest to keep from nail mail) to create the look I want!

I finally jumped on the latex cleanup bandwagon and bought the Color4Nails Crystalline Nail Veil! At some point I would like to try Kiesque’s Liquid Palisade but decided to try the cheaper alternative first. The product came yesterday and I was so excited to use it! Why, oh why, did I not purchase this sooner?? We all know I gravitate towards messier nail art techniques. This should have been my first purchase. Ever. I cannot change the past so on to the present and future!

It took a while to apply the product and wait for it to dry; arguably just as long as acetone cleanup at the end. But, cleanup was so easy. I used tweezers to remove the product easily and with one swift motion.

This may not be the case for everyone but while I do not have a latex allergy it still dries out my skin. This isn’t a surprise as my hands do become very dry when I wear latex gloves. And, all things considered, my skin does not dry out as much as when I use pure acetone.

Below is the finished look. I hope you like it!

Saran-Wrap Manicure for A2Z Nails: K is for Kitchen Sink

I am all about chaos on my nails. How many times have you seen one of my manicures and thought…Monica definitely didn’t need to add that or this would look better with out this…Well, I certainly have. However, the kitchen sink idea just made me nervous! There is a method to my madness, whether I am using the same color scheme or technique.

Kitchen Sink prompts as many colors, techniques, embellishments, and designs as I can possibly fit on my little nails. CONFUSION!!!

Unfortunately, my wrists decided to leave me hanging again so I opted for some fun, simple RA-friendly saran-wrapped (read: bubble-wrap) and color foiled nails.

At first, I did not really like my final result but it grew on me. It is definitely not soemthing I would normally choose but it kind of sort of works, right? Maybe if I got rid of my pinky?

What do you think? Is this a miss?

Kitchen Sink Brights | The Rite of AgingI used (from index to pinky) China Glaze In the Limelight, American Apparel Parakeet, Girly Bits Supersonic, and American Apparel Neon Yellow as my bases.

I sponged Nfu-Oh Opals Nfu-51 on my index and pinky finger before applying color foils (from Born Pretty Store).

For the middle finger, I bubble-wrapped with Pahlish La Royale and American Apparel Neon Violet.

On the ring fingre, I bubbled wrapped with Color Club Warhol and applied a sheer coat of Zoya Maria Luisa.

When the index and pinky nails dried I sponged a little Neon Yellow to blend out the colors.

Hi, my name is Monica and I have RA.

Don’t forget to check out the other kitchen sink nails below!

I love the rainbow prompts. I can use as many colors as I want! However, I never actually use traditional “rainbow” colors. I don’t think the colors work well together…at all! I know, I know, I’m super weird!!

Anyways, I hope you like today’s abstract, distressed look!

Blue/Green Distressed Nails | The Rite of AgingI started with 3 coats of American Apparel Parakeet as my base.

I used a paintbrush, acetone, Pahlish Le Bijou de Roi, Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Hunger Flames, Girly Bits Supersonic, and Color Club Pucci-licious.

Check out the other rainbow manicures below!

SIMPLES – Week 12: “Splodged” Base under Dots

I always fall behind during this challenge but I wanted to catch up because I had the perfect inspiration! A friend of mine made this awesome background for one of her art pieces. It is everything I love: color, neon, “splodging”, irregular dots…this piece is just cool! You should check out Bridgette’s Instagram, she is extraordinarily talented. I am and always have been in awe (and slightly jealous, hah!) of her artistic ability. The picture below links to her Instagram!

Her Instagram handle is thechairmanzou.

Take a look at her artwork, it is beyond amazing!

I definitely did not do this piece justice, but I had so much fun doing it. I am not sure I would call it RA-friendly because working with the eyeshadow applicator is a bit tedious but the abstract result doesn’t need to pristine. You decide!

I hope you like it! (I especially like how the pinky and ring finger turned out)

SIMPLES Challenge - Splodging Under Dots | The Rite of Aging

I started with 1 coat of Milani Spotlight White as my base.

I detailed with a dotting tool, a sponge-tip eyeshadow applicator and the following polishes:

  • Color Club Pucci-licious, Wham! Pow!, Almost Famous
  • Urban Outfitters Blue Velvet
  • Milani Black Swift
  • Girly Bits Supersonic

I wanted a matte effect but not completely so I used Cult Nails Wax That! It gives a matte, wax finish that kind of glistens but is not shiny or flat.

Nail Polish Canada’s 2014 Halloween Contest!

Born Pretty Store, Color Club, freehand, Girly Bits, Milani, Nail Art, Nail Polish Canada challenge, splatter, sugar-spun, water decals

I decided to participate in the NPC Halloween contest. Instead of trying to freehand some scary, detailed cool designs I focused on the techniques I am good at: splatter and sugar-spun! The color scheme says Halloween without the scary! I added some BPS spider web decals though because I was not feeling up to drawing them. I like how they peak out from the splatter. They’re kind of spooky, right?

Even though I waited 30 minutes to add top coat, the decals still dissolved. Very unfortunate.

I started with 2 coats of Color Club Wham! Pow! and Girly Bits Supersonic as my base.
