Where oh where was I? Starting work on my Oh Mon Dieu looks! I cheated and started early because I worked full-day camps this week. I knew I would be too tired to get much done.
I badly wanted to keep up with the challenge so I tucked away some prompts when I felt up to painting my nails.
Today, I switched the order of my meds to see if I’d feel better in the evening and I did! I am still in a fair bit of pain but I still felt like painting my nails. I went with a simple, RA-friendly watercolor look inspired by a picture of a purple flower and bumblebee I posted on Instagram. I received a request to do a nail art for it so here it is!

Why is it whenever I think about circles I immediately jump to the 1985 song “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)”?
Storytime: My first encounter with this song was actually a vacuum commercial that aired during I Love Lucy re-runs!
What has me thinking about circles? This endless loop of fatigue and insomnia. How are those related? If I am so exhausted shouldn’t I sleep more soundly at night? If only life was that easy! I tend to suffer more insomnia the more flared I am.
Whenever I switched medications I suffered from bouts of insomnia. I would flare up during the periods when the old biologic wore off and the new one had yet to kick in. I became less physically active and found it more difficult to fall asleep at night. I eliminated the more physical activities like climbing, or shopping in actual stores. Errand were spread out over days and I spent most of my time laying down and resting. I was just too flared (from pain or fatigue) to keep them in my daily routine.
When I was in a good place with my medications (especially while on the Orencia) I was more active, happier, “healthier” and as a result, slept better. I climbed, I shopped, I lived! As a result, my sleep hygiene was fantastic.
If you read my recent post detailing my “progress” on Actemra, this month, you will remember as the medication wore off, so did my energy levels. I was uncharacteristically tired, run down and list-less (like the I Love Lucy reference?)
All I wanted to do during the day was take naps. I wanted to lay down on my bed and stay there. By the evening, I was so exhausted I wanted to go to bed early and I fell asleep quickly. Until a few minutes later when I was just as awake as though it was morning. Cue the insomnia. If I was so exhausted shouldn’t I sleep better??
I spent a long time thinking about this (as seconds blinked by and minutes turned into hours) and I realized this made perfect sense.
When my medications work I have energy. I work, I climb, I go out with friends, I play with my dog, and I chase my cats. I am happier, healthier, and more active.
Research shows that the less the body “exercises”, both physically and mentally, the less likely it will obtain a good night’s rest. Activity stimulates the body and tires it. When your brain and body feel fatigued, it is easier for them to fall into the natural sleep cycle and stay there.
The lack of response to the new Actemra infusion means I am less physically active. Okay, so, work your brain, Monica! This makes me sound somewhat like a moron, doesn’t it? Don’t get me wrong, I read, I love reading; I do my Sudoku, I secretly love crosswords, I blog, I color, I paint my nails, I craft…but that only takes me so far. These activities do not tire my body.
You know when you’re so physically exhausted you lay down and pass out? You’re asleep the minute your head hits the pillow. Your body slows down the internal processes and you recharge.
I am not getting that. My body is at rest all day. I generally sit or recline while I do all of the above activities. As far as my body knows I am already recharging. When I get to bedtime my body does not think I need anymore rest so I toss and turn most of the night.
What a blasted cycle, huh?
And, because this music video is hilarious…I give you the 80’s hit:
Today I went with a fun, pink sugar-spun gradient. I cut my nails last night so this ended up being a little more difficult than I anticipated. I still like how it came out, though!
What do you think?

I am so sorry about the photo quality in this post. I am still taking pictures with my phone and it is being temperamental today.
I’ve read pretty negative things about the full nail decals from the Born Pretty Store. Regardless, I thought I’d try out a different type. They are not water decals but nail stickers. Maybe if I just peeled and stuck these would work better.
I chose a set of very cute plaid designs from the website.
Really pretty, right?
Well, unfortunately that is the only good thing I can say about these. That and the cuticle pusher and nail file are nice little additions.
Initial Thoughts: There are only six stickers, theoretically for each hand and the sizes are just huge. Check it out below. The best fit for my thumb was the third largest! For my third finger, the smallest. I figured these would be best used for accent nails.
Each set comes in their own plastic wrap, with a plastic coating to protect them from drying out. They, plus the two nail tools, were shoved into a plastic packet that arrived relatively wrinkled.
I assumed, as stickers, all I needed to do was pull the image from the backing and stick it on the nail. Nope! In an attempt to take them off, I ended up scratching off the image in slivers.
Maybe they are like water decals and had to be wet to come off the backing. Yes! I wet a cotton ball and pressed it to the back of the image. The water seeped through and loosened the glue. This worked well and the images came off nicely except if I missed an edge, then the image ripped.
Unfortunately, once it was wet, the sticker lost it’s adhesiveness. I applied base coat before applying the sticker and it totally disintegrated. If the image didn’t melt then it just creased. It looked like a three year old tried to glue it on to my fingers.
Those major holes are not from stretching the image over my nail or moving it around. They are from just gently pressing down! The sticker itself was rather flimsy so I didn’t even attempt the above and it turns out they were more flimsy than I thought! I had more success with my middle finger. I waited for the base coat to become more dry than tacky but the result was still not very pretty.
I will keep these decals and maybe try to use them as accents. The sizing is so off there is no way I could use these on all my nails. It stretched my patience to apply these. For these two nails, I wasted nearly 6 decals (out of the twelve provided)!
Even though these stickers were a bust I still think BPS has some great individual images. From my experience they do not crease and base/top coat do not destroy them. Better yet, you can usually find them on sale! Check out the huge assortment on their website, linked here. Born Pretty has a wide assortment of nail accessories for a really good price and they offer worldwide free shipping.

For this month’s infusion nail art I went with a RA-friendly blue dry brush! It is similar to last month’s look except less busy (linked here). I was so tired towards the tail end of this dosing cycle I wanted something quick and simple.
The dry brush technique does not require any extra tools, very little dexterity and even though it is a default during flares I rarely feature it on the blog! Hopefully that will change.
During one of my many nights of tossing and turning, I contemplated starting RA-friendly tutorials…If you follow me on Instagram you might see my hashtag #rafriendlynailart. I mark techniques like dry-brush, water decals, and uneven dotticures under this category but realize just seeing one picture makes it difficult to re-create it. These would not be as beneficial to more able-bodied nail artists but geared towards Spoonies and other Auto-Immune sufferers who want to make their nails look pretty!
What do you think about this tutorial idea? Love it or leave it?

Can you tell I’m not a huge candy person? I am not even a huge sweets person but I do have a soft spot for chocolates and cheesecakes.
After seeing Rachel’s (from Nails, the Final Frontier) chocolate drizzle nails I was reminded how much I love cheesecakes and decided on them for today’s prompt.
Sugar-spin all the things. This is what happens when I go on a three month break. I binge. Oops!
Why of course I had to do another sugar-spin for today’s prompt! I kind of stretched it to include sweets because I was at a loss for actual candy.
I created a funfetti cupcake base with chocolate frosting. I am not a huge cake or cupcake person but the above is the only type I will ever eat. It looks fun and the frosting is yummy!
