During my February monthly rheumatology appointment, my doctor tried to convince me to change medications. The Orencia hit its usual plateau and the inflammation slowly crept back in. I don’t really remember that doctor’s appointment. I don’t even know if I understood a word he said. I was so exhausted, foggy and painful nothing made sense. Life didn’t make sense. Well, if my biologic medication was no longer working it was a no-brainer to switch, right? Unfortunately, Saachi was still recovering from her emergency splenectomy (spleen and tumor removal) and would start chemo in the following weeks. With the cancer running rampant within her bloodstream I could not take the chance of getting any worse and not being able to care for my dog.

As the Orencia faded and the Actemra built up in my system there would be a period where I would feel worse of; mostly because my other medications were not doing enough on their own. I had to take care of Saachi. Reluctantly, my doctor agreed it was my call and we could wait.

I had a follow-up a couple of weeks after Saachi passed away and my doctor was still not pleased. I had more inflammation in my joints than in recent months. Something had to change. I had a little more wiggle room to try out new medication as my father was back in town so he could help me. I reluctantly decided to switch to IV form of Actemra.

Actemra is like any other TNF inhibitor. It suppresses the immune system at a specific spot. I was afraid my sinus infections would return. They were so debilitating. I could not care for my pets because my allergy to their dander set off these headaches. Since each biologic medications hits different points of the immune system there was an unlikely chance my sinus infections would return.

I tolerated the infusion well. It took about an hour since the technician wanted to make sure I did not have a reaction.

Even though I did not have any reactions during the IV I became very nauseous afterwards. The persistent nausea lasted about 24 hours but I still it intermittently. I did not notice a difference in my RA symptoms. I still felt painful and swollen.

Anyways, on to the nail art. I created a dry brush manicure topped with stamping. The infusion liquid is clear which is no fun for nail art so I landed on blue! I then stamped some molecules and bubbles.

Dry Brush and Stamped Nail Art | The Rite of AgingI started with Essie Mademoiselle as my base.

I dry brushed with a mix of Orly Sec n Dry, China Glaze UV Meant to Be, Milani Power Periwinkle and Sally Hansen Blue My Mind.

I stamped with Milani Black Swift, MoYou London plate 3 from the Scholar Collection, Essie No Place Like Chrome and Pueen Cosmetics plate PUEEN36.

My submission for Sam’s FingerFood themed weeks on Facebook!

One night it is snowing, the following day it is in the 50s and sunny, the evening is wonderful, and the next is frigid. No wonder I had trouble making up my mind on this theme!

Lightening is definitely not an original nail art idea but I wanted to give it a try, so I took inspiration from the design on my credit card! (Uh oh…I just saw Sam’s submission and I didn’t realize mine was so similar! I definitely did not mean to do that!)

I love love love how this came out! Clean up was a little messy so apologies on that…but the green polishes do not want to budge 😦

Even though I was going for a Christmas-y color palette, this kind of reminds me of galaxies!

Image

I used two coats Julie G White Orchid as my base.

I “water-colored” on top with:

  • Zoya Suvi, Giovanna
  • SpaRitual Running with Wolves, Howl

I then water-marbled with:

  • Milani Black Cherry
  • Orly Bonder
  • Essie Naughty Nautical

I finished with 1 coat Seche Vite and 1 coat INM Northern Lights.

Nail Art: Spearmint Marble

I have been so afraid of marbles! I am not patient enough to let it dry, the polishes smudge, and then I have to take it off…

I decided to try my hand at it again and I LOVE the result.

Tip to the world: NEVER EVER do water-marbling with your Bullmastiff asleep on your lap! (Saachi tends to move in her sleep and convulses when she dreams!)

Image

This reminds me of those spearmint candies!

Image

I wanted to keep the marble bare but I had to damage control after Saachi knocked my fingers (from my left hand) in the cup!

The glitter reminds me of sprinkles!

How cool does this look??

I used 2 coats Julie G White Orchid as my base. It has started to dry and goop (thankfully, for a water marble it does not matter!)

Marbling Polishes:

  • Zoya Giovanna (Great formula, stains the skin like mad!)
  • Sephora by OPI I Come in Peas
  • Essie Naughty Nautical
  • OPI Red Lights Ahead…Where? (I adore this polish! It is my perfect bright and I am on my second bottle!)
  • Orly Bonder base coat

Sinful Colors Holiday Rebel glitter!

I am so pleased with how this came out! I am slowly getting the hang of the marbling and I am totally hooked!

Nail Art: Snowstorm

And for your reading pleasure…Dumb Sh*t Monica Thinks: I walked into Trader Joe’s to buy dog food late last week and wondered why there were so many turkeys for sale….In my haste to get to the winter holidays I totally forgot about the fall ones!

Everyone in DC drives like they are bracing a snowstorm…even when there are barely any flakes.

By the way, it has not snowed yet but everyone thought it would!

Image

Image

I like the blurrier pictures because they lend more to the effect of snow flurries!

I used 2 coats of Sally Hansen Triple Shine “Slick Black”. I am not a huge fan of Sally Hansen polishes but the color on this was too amazing to pass up. I needed two thick coats to reach full opacity. The polish is a lot more sheer than it appears in the bottle.

I stamped with Essie “No Place Like Chrome” and Bundle Monster plate “BM 323”.

I love marbling each color separately. Marbles are messy so they should look messy! Well, not all the time, but I like the look of a “messy marble”.

I marbled with Orly “Bonder” and Sephora by OPI “Go My Own Way”.

I then marbled with Orly and Slick Black. I love how it cancelled out the colors underneath.

I stamped snowflakes with Julie G “White Orchid” and Bundle Monster plate “BM 319”.

marbling, Nail Art, Nfu Oh, Orly, Seche Vite, Sephora by OPI, Zoya

Apologies on the clean-up. The greens really stained my skin and try as I might I could not shake it from my cuticles.

Image

I love how the flakies look under the marbling! I added a blurry picture to show it off 🙂

Image

I used 2 coats Zoya “Suvi” as my base.

I added a sheer coat of Nfu Oh Opal 51.

I added a thick coat of Seche Vite so the marbling would pop on top.

I first marbled with Sephora by OPI “It’s Totally Karma” and Orly “Bonder” base coat.

I then marbled Sephora by OPI “I Come in Peas” and Orly “Bonder” on top.
