Some links may be affiliate ones.

I decided to re-start my monthly favorites posts because even though they do not get a lot of traffic I love making them! I also really enjoy reading and viewing other people’s favorites. They are a great way to keep track of fun trends and products!

SEPTFAVES

The first items are actually all part of a new eye makeup look I have really been enjoying.

Chanel Imitation

(Chanel Illusion d’Ombre Long Wearing Luminous Eyeshadow)

I love shimmer so I have no qualms about applying this glittery number all over my eyelids. These eyeshadows do not have a lot of base pigmentation but they build up pretty well. The glitter is prominent but chic. Initiation is the perfect neutral color for me. It is a cool-toned bronze similar to my skin color. The texture is spongy but slippery so I always apply this over primer. As with most glitter it travels during application but once the shadow sets it does not budge. Initiation was discontinued but the more gold Mirage is very similar.

Milani Cosmetics - Bella Copper Gel Powder Eyeshadow | The Rite of Aging

(Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Eyeshadow)

I apply Bella Copper on the outer half of my lid. This shadow is spongy but dense and extremely pigmented. It is a deep warm gold that looks a little brighter once applied. There is no fall out and wears well without fading. These new “gel” shadows are a definitely step up from the old Milani eyeshadows. Bella Caffe and Bella Espresso are next on my list to purchase.

While the product is fantastic I have a serious issue with the packaging. It feels cheap and flimsy. I don’t know if it is just mine but the plastic lid popped out the first time I opened it. I pushed it back in so the product wouldn’t dry out but it falls out with every use. I know packaging can make or break people’s decisions to buy a product so I just wanted to make a note of it.

Clinique 'All About Shadow' Super Shimmer Eyeshadow - Black Honey | The Rite of Aging

(Clinique ‘All About Shadow’ Super Shimmer Eyeshadow)

To finish the look, I apply Black Honey on the outer V of my eye. The good quality of this shadow surprises me as I don’t typically associate Clinique with good cosmetics. I guess there is a reason why the Black Honey line is a cult favorite. The color compliments the skin well, ranging from a deep burgundy to cranberry color. The shadow, itself, is soft and blend-able. While it is not particularly pigmented, over primer the intensity builds up nicely. I noticed it doesn’t crease but it does fade after a few hours, a side effect of low pigmentation! This is not a huge deal for me as I have extremely oily eyelids. I am used to touching up eye makeup frequently during the day.

Hourglass - 'Ambient' Lighting Palette | The Rite of Aging

(Hourglass – ‘Ambient’ Lighting Palette)

I gave into the hype! I held out for a good while but in the end, couldn’t help myself to a new highlighter. I considered purchasing the single pan of Radiant Light but it was more expensive for not that much more product. I could not see myself hitting pan on either in my own lifetime and figured the palette was a better bang for my buck.

Even on my no-makeup days I find myself dusting all three shades over my face. Dim Light provides a matte brightening and blurring effect for my entire skin, Incandescent Light highlights my brow bone and inner corner of the eyes while Radiant Light lends a glow to the top of my nose, cheekbones and forehead. There is a slight shimmer in the second two powders but it is barely visible on the skin. These powders provide a subtle radiance to the entire face for healthy-looking skin but do not build up to a high intensity highlight.

Have you tried any of these products? Do you like them? Let me know in the comments!

And, if you purchase online and haven’t already, sign up with Ebates! Many sites like Nordstrom, Sephora and Macy’s have great cashback options! (I am not affiliated with Ebates but have a referral code that everyone who has an account gets).

Hourglass, monthly favorites, nail art showcase, review

This year I will try to comment on more blogs. I read the posts and continually fall behind on Bloglovin’ but I am always too chicken to comment; especially when there are 40+ already there! I am also trying to pin more. I am already addicted to Pinterest and don’t nearly pin enough…yep, I said it!

Anyways, below are 5 favorites from last month!

PiggieLuv - Jan15favesCan we just talk about how Narmai used real chalk for this look? She said she did not have great control while “writing on the chalkboard” but I couldn’t tell the difference. The writing is so small and perfect. It shoots me straight back to high school! Narmai really uses her nails as a canvas!

Lady Maid Nails - Jan15favesI became familiar with Mandy’s blog during Debbie’s (The Crumpet) 31-Day Challenge this month. I absolutely love Mandy’s freehand! I especially love her take on the reversed polarities prompt. It is a total throwback to when my mom took me to the science discovery store and I played with the electric ball. Whenever I touched it the current turned pink as I moved my hand around.

fixintofaff - jan15favesHow cool is this sponging?? Ali only used the three primary colors to achieve this look. The Barry Ms she used were on the darker side so the final result came out cool and vampy…click the above link to see the finished look. How cool is this “during” picture?

hourglass ambient powderI love highlighters. Especially those I can sweep on even when I am not wearing foundation. Regardless of how well I take care of my skin, it sometimes looks sallow and medicine-ridden. I wear every single one of the above shades and I always look glow-y! The colors are soft and diffuse easily. Initially, I considered only buying the more golden tone “Radiant Light” but highlighters in the palette are quite smaller than the singles and about half the price but honestly, I cannot imagine going through any of them in my lifetime. Anyways, having three shades is a lot more versatile! I did not anticipate purchasing this palette but the checkout line waits right next to the Hourglass display…

69a7d4a246e9db5ba47533d5a17ae5b9.jpgAnd finally…Bao Bao plays in the first real DC snowfall. Enough said.

Definitely check out my Pinterest pages (nails – here) and (other things – here). There are a host of AMAZING nails especially from the Fairy Tales Digital Dozen week and some seriously cool random stuff including the map of Middle Earth drawn on a coffee cup.

monthly favorites, nail art showcase

Photos link to original source.

Yikes! It is already mid-December and I have not posted my favorite nail arts from November? This month is flying by. Can you imagine? We are just over 10 days away from Christmas…then we will be in 2015. What is going on??

Anyways, here are my top 5 picks from this past month, in no particular order. Check out the rest at my Pinterest page linked (here). By the way, I am so happy I finally figured out how to pin images from Instagram!!

November Favorites from Will Paint for FoodI gush over Meghan’s nail art. Her freehand is gorgeous and I especially love her art-inspired styles. Each component of this artist’s palette is well-defined while still incorporating the water-color washout style.

November Favorites from CraftynailJacqui does the cutest freehand designs. Her animals are super adorable and always make me smile. I love the on-edge ears of these pandas. They instantly reminded me of that episode of FRIENDS where Joey competes on the game show and guesses “A GHOST?” You know what expression I’m talking about 😉

November Favorites from @stefka62_sevlievoI love Stefmal’s nail art. Each of her designs have a sweet but sassy quality. These stuffed toys are the cutest. The bears are so snuggly and I think the small transparent glitter discs are the cherries on top. They add to the whimsical feel of this manicure.

November Favorites from K's Nail ArtAll of Kairi’s manicures are superb! She has a eye for geometric shapes and gorgeous color combinations. Her plaid designs are always on my list of favorites. I mean. Purple. Plaid. Beautiful.

November Favorites from Topshop

These super comfortable socks from Topshop are warm, easy to scrunch down around the ankle, and they do not skew the look of my feet. Check out Topshop’s “3 for $15” website promo if you’re interested. There are so many holiday-themed styles to choose from.

I hope you like my selection of favorites this month!

My July Favorites – Showcase

Each picture links directly to the original web post!

I wanted to start a favorites showcasingg other people’s nail art, products, etc that I loved throughout the month. I wanted to do this for a while but always forgot which things went with which month! I remedied this by starting Pinterest monthly boards (one for nail art, one for everything else) so I could easily organize everything. Finally, my unhealthy addiction to Pinterest came in handy! Check out all my nail art favorites here and my favorite everything else’s (well, it’s a word now!) here.

Below I compiled ten. This is not to say I don’t love everything in my Favorites tab but if I do not narrow down the list I will talk forever and ever! In no particular order…

Mordor Nail Art 4

Jacki from Adventures in Acetone created this amazing Mordor nail art! She completely stole my heart when she said Mordor was a worthy “land” for the Digit-al Dozen prompt this month. As you all know, I wholeheartedly believe Middle Earth exists in a different dimension so I could not stop gushing over this manicure.  Jacki’s freehand is wonderful and the matte top coat adds to the effect. Check out her amazing pictures where the lava glows under the black light!

99b7a4a8878d68c6a548c424f3b5875e

I finally said a sad farewell to my Blackberry and upgraded to a true Android, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Everyone makes fun of me because the thing is bigger than my face. That aside, the voice recognition is superb which is great on my flare-y days but the phone comes with a stylus which is just plain cool. As any normal 20-something girl I set out to find a case for my new technological monster. Where is the best place to look? Etsy, of course!  And, because I am a huge nerd, I wanted to showcase my love of Lord of the Rings.

This case is absolutely perfect. The picture is not stretched or blurred. The thick silicone wraps around the phone so I imagine it is well-protected from a fall. Did I mention shipping is ridiculously fast? I received the order within a week of placing it!

b3de3abda662cf6cca595754f8700ca4

This is my FAVORITE quote from any book, movie, spoken or written word ever. (It would be from Lord of the Ring’s Fellowship of the Ring…) I have never been a full-time kind of person. I get bored quickly and like to move around so this quote describes my life motto. This is my next tattoo, if I get another one, so it makes sense it would be my phone case as well.

The details are not stretched and the case wraps around the phone. It is made out of plastic like the “barely there” case so it may crack with impact but it sticks like glue. I have trouble removing it when I switch cases. I did not notice the map until I received the product but it is not the typical world map. I am not really sure which map it is, to be honest. I also received the shipment a week within ordering!

9aa626d65174b2afa6bb6750a8afe5c6Neons! ‘Nuff said. I absolutely love toothpick marbles. They always look fun and fantastic and Sheila did a fabulous job. (Yay alliteration!) The colors work so well together and they do not mix or become muddy! This manicure is really amazing.

97ee866550856635d69c127a0d7911aa

Neons and abstract are the secret keys to my favorites. Pearl created a great manicure with an awesome color scheme and precision I can only dream of achieving. There are no smudges and the glitter does not spill over onto the base which is always a difficult avoidance! Pearl’s water-spotting is a work of art. I would love to re-create this look for an evening out!

7ab49be51191feacd5d9b29b6120b33c

I love plaid designs and the ones on Marta’s nails are no exception. Her stamping is exceptional and her splatter is gorgeous. It is well-defined but melts into the background. There are many layers but they come together for one great look.

fab8d7f500e31d917fd7dec653df1a8f

If am not loving abstract art I am loving clean cut geometric shapes like the ones from Mireia. This is her submission for the “round and square” prompt from the Nail-Art-A-Go-Go challenge. Her freehand is so well-done it looks stamped!

50a9b2249928d3fdf1b70e242296ff54

While I am not a fan of florals on myself, I adore them on other people. I have a soft spot for Cherry Blossoms which is probably a side effect of growing up in Washington DC! Sheila’s flowers look real but her gorgeous black and white background steals the show. The shading and gradient are to die for and it reminds me of the traditional watercolor paintings on Japanese rice paper.

f92ba5290175884b18faa37686ea2e93

Wow. Just wow. This amazing freehand “Aurora Borealis” from Emma took my breath away. The colors danced on the nail. Words cannot express how much I loved this manicure.

71b5b9c2e4e1452b2330c1a37b238395

I love this teeny dotticure from Jemma! This was one of her manicures for the Oh Mon Dieu 2 Challenge in July and I swooned when I first saw it. I love tiny dots. They are cute and wonderful and these are no exception. Jemma’s dots are even and the colors are bright and defined. Even though white nail polish never screams subtle, the nail art does and makes anyone do a double take at your nails.

I hope you like my new take on monthly favorites! Please check out my Pinterest boards for the full list!

I do not really have new favorites this month, they are items I reached for more often during May!

Too Faced’s The Chocolate Bar Eye Palette

(USD $49.00 for 16 shadows) –> found at Sephora

I grabbed my Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette (review linked here) more often than any other palette I own. Even though I consider my Urban Decay Naked I palette my holy grail, I only use four shades. With the Chocolate Bar palette, I use almost all the colors! Win!

 Caudalie’s “Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet”

(USD $39.00 for 1.3oz) –> found at Nordstrom or Sephora

DSCF9368_fotor

I use this occasionally when the evenings are too humid for my Chantecaille night cream. I bought this on a whim and loved it. Upon reading the description I was immediately curious. A gel moisturizer that breaks into water particles? Interesting! I never tried a gel lotion before but I figured it was a good alternative to a typical face cream, especially since I have an oily complexion in the summer. I decided to give it a try because so far, I have been loving the brand!

It is a very unique face lotion. It has a light airy consistency that when rubbed into the skin feels like a light serum. It absorbs relatively quickly and leaves the skin refreshed and hydrated. It does not look or feel like a typical gel but it does not really matter since it does not remain that initial texture. I really like it since I do not need a lot of product and it applies smoothly.

Lauren Ralph Lauren Woman’s Alexa Sandal

(USD $19.99 – 65.00) –> found at Amazon.com or DSW

DSCF9171

I have a lot of difficulty finding flats and sandals. I have absurdly flat and extremely thin feet. I either do not fill out the shoes properly or the over-the-foot detailing is not low enough to fit snugly. Because of this, I have to physically go shoe-shopping. It is generally always a miss when I shop online. Last summer was hot. It was humid and hot until November (no joke!). Sneakers were out of the question and so were ballet flats. I went to DSW and tried on sandal after sandal.

I was feeling pretty disheartened when along came the Lauren Ralph Lauren Alexa sandal. The one in my proper size was also the display and the ankle band was too stretched out. Thankfully, the next size up also fit.

I wear these sandals to death. I find them easy to walk in, the ankle band fits me snugly so my feet do not slip out. Don’t you hate it when that happens with sandals?? The separator thong does not rub in between my toes (a common problem I find with flip flops) and the over portion is comfortable. The best part is, even in very hot, humid and sweaty weather the sole does not become slippery! And last, but not least, they do not make my symptoms any worse!

Since I love these shoes so much, I decided to purchase another set in my proper size. Amazon carries them and they come in A MYRIAD of colors! Last year, DSW only carried them in the black/white or brown detailing. Amazon sells them in yellows, blues, metallics and reds, amongst others!

However, proceed with caution. The company who sells them does not specify how new the shoes are. When I received my shoes, the ankle band on one was stretched out and the buckle holes on both were a bit worn. They may not be used but they had definitely been tried on. Bummer. Thankfully, Amazon & the company made the return easy.

I would definitely recommend. Some reviewers said the sandals were of poor quality and broke or wore down quickly. I have not had this problem. The ankle band stretched some, but no more than any other sandal I tried.

Lush’s “Vanilla Dee-Lite” Body Lotion

(USD $27.95 for 8.45oz) –> found at http://www.lushusa.com

DSCF9156_fotor

I bought this during the height of my curiosity of LUSH products. I am actually very unhappy with this product. For the price, I expected baby soft skin. Instead, I got mildly hydrated skin with visible lines and tackiness.

The fragrance is heavenly, though. It is true vanilla that is not overly sweet, but has the nutty aroma.

However, the reason why it is in my favorites this month is because it is perfect for blog pictures. It hydrates my hands enough so I feel comfortable photographing them and unlike other hand lotions, it does not leave a greasy or shiny cast. It has a special place in my nail art supply kit!

Jo Malone’s “Lime Basil & Mandarin” Cologne

(USD $60.00 for 1oz) –> found at Nordstrom

I wanted a new Spring fragrance. I ran out of my Prada Infusion d’Iris so I thought this would be the perfect time to try something new. I loved the light, floral candles from Jo Malone and I heard raves of the brand’s fragrances so I visited the Jo Malone counter at my local Nordstrom. I spritzed four different scents on my arms before continuing to shop the half-yearly sale.

The Lime, Basil & Mandarin fragrance was the one I kept sniffing and sniffing again. It oxidized wonderfully on my skin. The first notes I detected were not what drew me in. It was the spicy basil grounding the fragrance that made me purchase it.

The initial citrus-y orange scent is strong but not over-powering. It reminds me of those orange-lemonade drinks with mint or basil garnishes.

It is a very unique scent, but as I realize most of the Jo Malone fragrances are! What really draws me to this, though, is it is very unisex. I think this would smell great on a guy, granted, I am not sure how many men would wear a cologne called “Lime, Basil & Mandarin”.

The only downside to this perfume is it is not very long lasting. I should have realized as it is not an Eau de Parfum but a Cologne, which is generally lighter and more dilute.

I wear this during the day when I know I will be inside, so it lasts longer. But I love that it is almost foolproof. It is extremely difficult to apply too much! If you do, just wait and most of it will diffuse.

Jo Malone’s “Black Cedarwood & Juniper” Cologne

(USD $120.00 for 3.4oz) –> found at Nordstrom

I did not plan on purchasing this perfume. I was in the market for one new one and I kept going back to the Lime, Basil & Mandarin scent even over this one. Regardless, there was always something that kept the Cedarwood fragrance at the back of my head. It was spicy but sweet and it was my second choice out of the four initial tests.

I returned to Nordstrom to get a sample, I decided against purchasing at the time. And, of course, out of all the samples I had, I reached for this the most.

I bit the bullet and returned to the store to purchase…but, since it was limited edition, it was sold out!! According to the sales assistant, most of the local Nordstroms were also sold out of this item (now, whether this is true or not I do not know but I was not about to drive all over the place for one bottle of perfume!).

I ran home and purchased the fragrance online. I could have forgotten about the cologne sooner or later but the purchase was mostly fueled by how popular it was and how much more difficult it was to get!

I cannot really say what this perfume smells like. Once the top notes evaporate it becomes more sweet than spicy, but it reminds me of sitting outside after a hard thunderstorm with the addition of juniper.

Even though this perfume was expensive, a 3.4-ounce bottle lasts a long time. For reference, a 1-ounce bottle of perfume lasts me about six or seven months with daily use.

DSCF9137

Well, that is it for my monthly favorites! Have you tried any of these? What do you think? Is there something I should try that is similar?

Monthly Favorites Changes

31 Saturday May 2014

blogging, blogging schedule, monthly favorites

Quick question everyone.

Would you prefer my monthly favorite posts to span over the entire month (instead of one gigantic post, I would post once week with one or two products) or would you prefer them all to be in the same post at the beginning of the month?

The reason I bring this up is because I personally zone out during Monthly Favorite posts. If they are YouTube videos I will only watch for products I am interested in, and I rarely get to them anyways. If they are blog posts I scroll through and skim the text.

I know, I know I am an awful fellow blogger but these posts are full of text and are not that captivating. It is hard to make straight up reviews interesting. If this redeems myself, I find it hard to write these posts as well. While I love ranting and raving about the products I love it is hard to find a hook to keep people reading!

Do any of you have this problem?

I do not want to remove monthly favorites all together, given they are beneficial. Positive reviews for products in constant use is an interesting concept but, I think personally, it might be easier to chew in bite-size, snippet format.

This is my pitch, feel free to disagree in the comments if you think this is not a good idea, but my plan is to post a monthly favorite post every week. A short blurb, about why the product rocks. These posts will not take the place of other planned posts of the day. But, I find it will be easier to digest one or two products at a time versus four or five.

You know what I wish? During the month, I insert thumbnail pictures of my favorite items. If you click on them, it takes you to a separate favorites post. Kind of like a scavenger hunt for the blog. If you “find” every favorites post that month you get a point. You would message me with the list of items and the secret word so I know you clicked on the link/read the review. If you gain 3 points, you win a prize.

Since I am not a self-hosted website I do not know if this is possible. If it is, PLEASE PLEASE tell me. I would totally follow through with this game. The biggest issue is I do not want the reviews to show up in the blog roll. That would be a dead giveaway right??

What do you think?? Please let me know!!
