I don’t have a lot to say on today’s manicure except that I cannot stop dotting on paper! Why not continue the trend on my nails?

I hope you like it!

I took a quick swatch photo of the base color. I really should wear this on it’s own much more often. It looks great against my skin and it’s the perfect neon without screaming “HI! I’M HERE!”

I am so so so sorry for the quality of this picture. I took multiple photos, many times and I never got a decent one! Eventually I snapped one with flash and while my skin is freakish, I got a clear shot of the sugar-spin.

There are multiple Instagram challenges going on in August and while I am not sure I will take on each and every prompt, I will definitely do the ones that peak my interest. Gradient and rainbow did so the following manicure covers both the #clairestelle8august and #dreamnailschallenge challenges!

I was a little skeptical about using neons for the sugar-spin especially since Sun Worshiper dries down sort of matte. I was pleasantly surprised. All three polishes I used worked wonderfully and the gradient came out exactly how I wanted.

I am a little peeved my middle nail ended up a little stringier than usual but my nails are so short I had to make the threads a little thinner.

Check out the bottom of the post for some of my tricks for a great sugar-spin!

Sugar-Spin (from cuticle to tip): Color Club Wham! Pow!, China Glaze Sun Worshiper, Daisy Know Me Name?

I am not sure I can do a proper video tutorial until I get a new camera. I am still using my phone and I just don’t know how to take a video while doing a sugar-spin! So, for now, I will just write down so tips below! If you have any questions please ask!!

  • I use a clean white piece of paper for my polish puddles. This way I do not mistakenly blend pigments.
  • I pour out the polishes before I apply my base color. That way, I am not waiting around for ages for them become tacky.
  • I use separate toothpicks for each color.
  • While I wait for each layer of my base coat and base color to dry I turn the polish over so it dries evenly.
  • After I am done with the sugar-spin, I use the clean side of the toothpick to gently push the edges of the threads underneath the nail. Then, I pull the excess straight back for easier clean-up. Otherwise, the cleanup brush will move the polish around and ruin the design.
  • If parts of the threads are too gloopy use the clean side of the toothpick to gently pull from the center of the thread to the edges of the nail.

My little girl’s back legs have been hurting for a few weeks because every time she climbs the stairs she whacks her already bad knees. Because of this, she hasn’t done her circus act trick which is one of my favorites.

When I say “do your circus act” Affie stands on her back legs and grabs her pill (or treat) from my hand. She is so freaking cute!

Okay, so she is totally cheating in this photo but look at that little smile!!

I was inspired by my dog’s antics and did a neon watermarble! I don’t even remember the last time I did a watermarble…What is my nail art life right now??

I’ve been asked to blog a bit about how I  live day to day with RA so I will start incorporate that in next posts.

This probably goes without saying but I never do anything before I take my medications in the morning (except make the breakfast to eat them with). I’ve made the mistake of replacing my bed covers, playing with the pets or typing which all ended in pretty bad flares and even worse days. When I’ve slept well I feel energetic, I have reduced pain and I forget I have RA…for the time being.

I take some of my medications two to three times a day depending on my pain level. If I have errands to run or, on the rare occasion, I go out or climb I time my medications a couple of hours before I need to be “alive”.

This timing varies per person but after some trial and error I realized my “sweet spot” for feeling my best lies around two hours after I’ve taken my pain medication.

For today’s nail art, I have an easy RA-friendly water-spotting look. I got the Color4Nails Crystalline Nail Veil today and was super excited to try it out! It works really well, though, it may be easier just to tape my fingers with the water techniques. Otherwise, I’d use way too much product.

1-DSCF6047_fotorI used American Apparel Neon Purple and Color Club Pucci-licious as my bases.

I waterspotted with hairspray L’Oreal Paris Sexy in Sequins, Color Club On the Rocks, and Julie G Butterflies & Rosebuds.

Dotticure Nail Art for NAIL: 1980s

I was not sure how to approach this week’s prompt as I was born at the end of 1980’s. I decided to stick with pop culture references. Andy Warhol’s popularity was technically during the 60’s but I took inspiration from a 1981 piece he made of Madonna.

There is no way I was going to paint this on my fingertips so I decided to go with a RA-friendly asymmetrical dotticure instead. I hope you like it!

Can we take a moment to talk about how GLOWING this neon pink is? It is probably one of my favorite pinks and the bottle is almost empty. I tried to brighten the photo a little for skin tone purposes but it washed out the pink!

Neon Bright Dotticure | The Rite of AgingI used Color Club Warhol as my base. I did not realize the coincidence until just now writing this post!

I dotted with Zoya Pippa.

RA-friendly Gradient Nail Art

May is National Arthritis Month so, in honor, I will focus on RA-friendly looks! I have not decided yet if I will stick with one technique per week or vary them but stay tuned for simple, fast and most importantly, easy nail art!

Did you know?

RA risk varies with geography!

I do not know whether this is true or not or how much research supports it but I have heard similar claims. Lower Vitamin D levels have been linked with higher RA risk. The farther a person gets from the equator the less sunlight and Vitamin D is absorbed into the body. This makes some sense but I have also heard people who live in cities are more likely to develop any time of autoimmune. Cities are chock-full of pollution, a number of debris and bacterias. And yes, I did grow up in Washington, DC!

Anyways, onto the nail art! Today I have a simple two color gradient with sponged neon glitter. This reminds me of ice cream and sprinkles! I hope you like it!

Brown Gradient and Sponged Glitter | The Rite of AgingI started with 2 coats of Barry M Lychee as my base. I protected it with a quick dry top coat. I found if I don’t do this the color peels up with the sponge.

I used a makeup sponge, Lychee and Milani Dark Coffee for the gradient.

I sponged China Glaze Let the Beat Drop on the tips.

I covered everything with a generous coat of INM Northern Lights.

Neon Glitter Accents – Born Pretty Store Review

3D decorations, Born Pretty Store, Nail Art, neon, review

With the exception of the Picasso Swirl and sugar-spun techniques, I rarely venture into 3D nail art. I decided to expand my horizons and try some nail art decorations from the Born Pretty Store. And, if I am going to experiment with something I am not really into why not make sure it is something I will use? Anything neon is my favorite so when I saw these fun neon rounds I quickly added them to my review pile! Sure, I could have tried out neon studs (like these) but those were way to 3D for me! Baby steps, right? (The below picture links to the product’s webpage).

DSCF5596

There are quite a few colors you can choose from, including a deep purple and blue to a neon pink and green! I decided to lay low and start with neon yellow since yellow goes with everything, right? Heh…

After seeing them on the website, I expected a hard round accent; like the larger glitter studs except maybe flatter. However, when I received them in the mail I was little skeptical. The individual pieces were static-y and clung to each other and the lid. I was thought these were going to be a thinner but just as sturdy version of regular studs but after seeing them they seemed more like smaller version of hole punched paper. Also, each separated piece was not entirely opaque (as you can see if the picture above).

Now, after using them, my skepticism vanished. I like the thin consistency of these pieces. I thought they were going to break and fall apart due to their flimsy look but they were a lot more sturdy than I gave them credit for. The opacity of the pieces also did not pose a problem! I used a toothpick dipped in top coat to pick up individual pieces and they lifted away from the pile smoothly and without problems.

See below the nail art I created with them!

Neon Watermarble with Glitter Accents | The Rite of Aging

These decorations are made from plastic so they are not particularly malleable. I had a lot of difficulty applying them flat. I have relatively prominent C-curves so the rounds stuck up at the edges. I used top coat to fill in the ridges and it sort of helped. I used 2 coats of top coat on top, as well, but the edges still stuck up. As a result, the circles on my index and middle finger fell off by the next morning (I created this look the evening before). It is definitely a bummer but not enough to deter me from using them again. I just have to play around with placement a little more.

I would highly recommend these accents if you, like me, don’t necessarily like 3D accents but still want to use decorations like them! These are thin but sturdy and come in great colors! Even if they may not last long on the nail, at $1.78 per tin, it’s still worth a try.
