I’ve been asked to blog a bit about how I  live day to day with RA so I will start incorporate that in next posts.

This probably goes without saying but I never do anything before I take my medications in the morning (except make the breakfast to eat them with). I’ve made the mistake of replacing my bed covers, playing with the pets or typing which all ended in pretty bad flares and even worse days. When I’ve slept well I feel energetic, I have reduced pain and I forget I have RA…for the time being.

I take some of my medications two to three times a day depending on my pain level. If I have errands to run or, on the rare occasion, I go out or climb I time my medications a couple of hours before I need to be “alive”.

This timing varies per person but after some trial and error I realized my “sweet spot” for feeling my best lies around two hours after I’ve taken my pain medication.

For today’s nail art, I have an easy RA-friendly water-spotting look. I got the Color4Nails Crystalline Nail Veil today and was super excited to try it out! It works really well, though, it may be easier just to tape my fingers with the water techniques. Otherwise, I’d use way too much product.

1-DSCF6047_fotorI used American Apparel Neon Purple and Color Club Pucci-licious as my bases.

I waterspotted with hairspray L’Oreal Paris Sexy in Sequins, Color Club On the Rocks, and Julie G Butterflies & Rosebuds.

Did You Know?

Rheumatoid arthritis is often diagnosed late or after joint damage begins. Symptoms are often mistaken as having a less severe cause.

When I first noticed symptoms it was six months before my diagnosis. I sustained a wrist “injury” that took six months to heal. In retrospect, this type of problem should not have eaten away at my mobility, let alone over six months. This was a huge indicator of a larger problem. As the wrist healed, I noticed issues in my other joints.

Thinking even further back, I may have experienced symptoms during college! I lived on the third floor of my dorm and I thought my knees and ankles and hips hurt because I carried my textbooks and heavy backpacks up and down the stairs all day, all over campus. I was unhappy, excessively tired and I just assumed it was stress. How wrong was I?!

I was always healthy before this. I got the occasional cold and sinus infection but there was no indication I could be seriously ill. I just chocked these symptoms as “college life”.

Here’s a tip: NEVER EVER blog before you’ve taken your medications. I woke up at 5 am this morning because I needed to pee. Prednisone is a diuretic and the higher the dose, the more urgent my bladder becomes. I forgot I cannot drink water after 11pm at night before and well, I did. After I woke up I remembered I Love Lucy was on and then I was fully awake.

I thought about using my Dragon Dictate (voice recognition) software but didn’t? I have no good reason for not using it.

As a result of this second of stupidity, I was tired, run down, listless, today,..(heh! [minus the listless]) and I had a boatload of errands to run. So, today, I present a seriously RA-friendly nail art: sponged glitter and water decals.

Sponge Glitter and Water Decals | The Rite of Aging Early

Sponge Glitter and Water Decals | The Rite of Aging EarlyI started with 2 coats of Color Club Twiggie as my base.

I used a sponge tip applicator to apply a generous helping of Serum No. 5 Happy Special Day! to the cuticles.

I applied Pueen Cosmetics water decals to random fingers.

Did You Know?

It was first believed exercise would exacerbate and quicken the progression of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Now, it is proven light exercise helps protects the joints and keeps the muscles from atrophying.

I am not going to lie. The most annoying comment I hear, from doctors to friends, is “exercise!”. It really is not as simple as that. I know exercise lessens my symptoms (I feel more limber and alert), however, sometimes activity worsens them. If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you may remember blog posts here and there about my grievances about climbing and RA. It is such a fine line for me. I have to be very careful. I rarely climb for more than a couple of hours, I do not push myself and the minute I feel a “twinge” I stop. If I’ve done grocery shopping or done any housework I do not climb; even with a lengthy nap in between activities, it is way too much for me to handle.

But…now onto the nail art! I like using an eyeshadow sponge tip applicator with similar colors. It is more RA-friendly than using a makeup sponge and the uneven lines are masked better.

Why, oh why do I not use this flakie more??? This gorgeous topper was actually at the back of my cabinet! I managed o get my hands on it before the shade was discontinued. (Hah, maybe that’s why! Do you ever feel guilty using polishes you know you can no longer get? I especially feel that way about the old Milani polishes!) However, I do really like how this look came out. It reminds me of those fun thermal bath toys that would change from pink to purple when placed in warm water!

I hope you like it! (I completely forgot to take a sunlight picture so I had to settle for my usual indoor lighting)

Purple-Pink Sponge Gradient | The Rite of AgingI started with China Glaze Violet Vibes and Barry M Plum as my base.

I used generous coats of Nfu Oh Nfu 51 on the accent nails and sponged it on the tips of my index and pinky nails.

I stamped with Mundo de Unas Neon Pink and Pueen Cosmetics plate PUEEN 85. I usually stamp my right hand first then move to my dominant left. As I worked with MdU formula more it became more opaque. I am still learning this specialty polish but I like the gradient effect!

RA-friendly Gradient Nail Art

May is National Arthritis Month so, in honor, I will focus on RA-friendly looks! I have not decided yet if I will stick with one technique per week or vary them but stay tuned for simple, fast and most importantly, easy nail art!

Did you know?

RA risk varies with geography!

I do not know whether this is true or not or how much research supports it but I have heard similar claims. Lower Vitamin D levels have been linked with higher RA risk. The farther a person gets from the equator the less sunlight and Vitamin D is absorbed into the body. This makes some sense but I have also heard people who live in cities are more likely to develop any time of autoimmune. Cities are chock-full of pollution, a number of debris and bacterias. And yes, I did grow up in Washington, DC!

Anyways, onto the nail art! Today I have a simple two color gradient with sponged neon glitter. This reminds me of ice cream and sprinkles! I hope you like it!

Brown Gradient and Sponged Glitter | The Rite of AgingI started with 2 coats of Barry M Lychee as my base. I protected it with a quick dry top coat. I found if I don’t do this the color peels up with the sponge.

I used a makeup sponge, Lychee and Milani Dark Coffee for the gradient.

I sponged China Glaze Let the Beat Drop on the tips.

I covered everything with a generous coat of INM Northern Lights.

Dry Brush and Stamped Nail Art for First Actemra Infusion

During my February monthly rheumatology appointment, my doctor tried to convince me to change medications. The Orencia hit its usual plateau and the inflammation slowly crept back in. I don’t really remember that doctor’s appointment. I don’t even know if I understood a word he said. I was so exhausted, foggy and painful nothing made sense. Life didn’t make sense. Well, if my biologic medication was no longer working it was a no-brainer to switch, right? Unfortunately, Saachi was still recovering from her emergency splenectomy (spleen and tumor removal) and would start chemo in the following weeks. With the cancer running rampant within her bloodstream I could not take the chance of getting any worse and not being able to care for my dog.

As the Orencia faded and the Actemra built up in my system there would be a period where I would feel worse of; mostly because my other medications were not doing enough on their own. I had to take care of Saachi. Reluctantly, my doctor agreed it was my call and we could wait.

I had a follow-up a couple of weeks after Saachi passed away and my doctor was still not pleased. I had more inflammation in my joints than in recent months. Something had to change. I had a little more wiggle room to try out new medication as my father was back in town so he could help me. I reluctantly decided to switch to IV form of Actemra.

Actemra is like any other TNF inhibitor. It suppresses the immune system at a specific spot. I was afraid my sinus infections would return. They were so debilitating. I could not care for my pets because my allergy to their dander set off these headaches. Since each biologic medications hits different points of the immune system there was an unlikely chance my sinus infections would return.

I tolerated the infusion well. It took about an hour since the technician wanted to make sure I did not have a reaction.

Even though I did not have any reactions during the IV I became very nauseous afterwards. The persistent nausea lasted about 24 hours but I still it intermittently. I did not notice a difference in my RA symptoms. I still felt painful and swollen.

Anyways, on to the nail art. I created a dry brush manicure topped with stamping. The infusion liquid is clear which is no fun for nail art so I landed on blue! I then stamped some molecules and bubbles.

Dry Brush and Stamped Nail Art | The Rite of AgingI started with Essie Mademoiselle as my base.

I dry brushed with a mix of Orly Sec n Dry, China Glaze UV Meant to Be, Milani Power Periwinkle and Sally Hansen Blue My Mind.

I stamped with Milani Black Swift, MoYou London plate 3 from the Scholar Collection, Essie No Place Like Chrome and Pueen Cosmetics plate PUEEN36.

Pissed-Off Prescriptions (Long, Long Post!)

02 Monday Mar 2015

autoimmune, controlled substances, flare, Leucovorin Calcium, medicines, prescription medicines, prescriptions, rheumatoid arthritis, Tramadol, Vicodin

I am stopping my medications.

Just kidding…

I am sure you noticed the increasing “security” around prescription drugs and the increasing difficulty of obtaining them (don’t I sound like an addict right now…) And, if filling and picking up the prescription is a piece of cake, paying for them is not, even if you meet your insurance deductible.

Today’s post is not about my specialty medication but my everyday run of the mill prescriptions. Enjoy!

prescription meds

Before we get into the lovely narcotics let’s work start with literally the most boring supplement ever..

I take a weekly Leucovorin Calcium tablet. It is a folic acid supplement that counters the effects of my chemo medication, Methotrexate. It protects my red blood cell counts and reduces my nausea. Honestly, I am not sure what happened but back in December I ran out of pills. I called for a refill and my insurance declined it. Apparently, they would not refill for five weeks! I thought I only took two extra pills when I missed my weekly injections…why wasn’t it covered? This was most certainly not a opiate. It probably had a negative potential for abuse.

I could purchase four pills at $5.00 a pop to tide me over but I refused to give in to this insurance craziness

You guys know me well now, I am a proud consumer. I like spending money, I like buying things. But, you know what I have a problem with? Paying for things I ain’t supposed to be paying for! (CVS has such a great rewards program all my purchases average 50% to 60% off, Bath and Body Works, about 70% – if I cannot manage a good discount I don’t purchase!) I stopped the medication for four weeks…and my dad really yelled at me for it. Okay, for good reason too…My hair fell out and I was all sorts of lethargic. Regardless, I stood firm…but, enough of the boring medications…

It’s now time for the fun stuff! Let’s start with Tramadol, the least aggresive of the two narcotics I talk about.

On my “foggier”, more flared up days I felt like my brain was deteriorating and decaying from the inside. I sometimes did not even remember conversations while I was having them! I tried to lessen the amount I worried about by placing my prescriptions on “Auto-Fill”. The pharmacy refilled medications as early as seven days and paid me a courtesy call when they were ready for pick-up.

Tramadol is now a Class IV substance. It has always been considered a “controlled” substance but with the new classification pharmacies were no longer legally able to fill the prescription before its due date. On top of that, they need a new written prescription every few months.

My pain medications are one of the more important pills I take on a daily basis. They take away my pain and allow me to function (How much more do I sound like an addict now?) What if I cannot get to the pharmacy that same day? Am I supposed to go without painkillers? It’s not the biggest deal in the world, just a little extra work. Speaking of extra work….

Now it’s time for the really fun stuff!

Vicodin does not make my daily medicine list. It does not even make my monthly or bi-yearly list. It is reserved for those special occasions when I f*ck up my spine so badly the pain radiates throughout my entire body (I rarely curse on the blog but this pain warrants that language). My spine is the few areas that are not as affected as other joints except during very, very bad flares.

We got a snowstorm last weekend. An actual snowstorm, with at least five or six inches of accumulation. I got a true snow day which unfortunately, includes shoveling. I only freed the back and driver’s side of my car so I could get out the driveway but I felt it in my lower back. I added insult to injury and gave Saachi a bath. While she was in ICU she refused to pee until she could no longer hold it and urinated in the cage. She was a stinky pup but I had to wait for her suture line to heal over the two week recovery period. It was easy to give her a bath but it was activity I was unused to.

As I was getting ready for bed I knew I was going to pay for the extra work the next day. I was already in discomfort but I could feel the acute tingle creeping in. Usually, sleep healed my pain but this time it was not enough. I was fighting a sinus infection and a flare and there was just not enough energy left over.

I called my doctor for a Vicodin prescription and asked his medical assistant to fax it into the pharmacy for me. Guess what? The FDA also re-classified Vicodin as a class II drug. This meant faxed-in scripts were no longer accepted. I had to physically pick up and submit the prescription myself.

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?

The last thing I wanted to do while my spine was out and could not even bend down was drive to my doctor’s office, drive to my pharmacy and wait for the drug!

At the time, the idea of driving made me sad so I asked her to mail me the prescription which postponed my access to the painkillers by a couple of days…

Eventually, I got my pills, I filled my prescriptions, I did not even pay through my nose for them…it was just getting tougher and tougher to get hold of them.

Have you had trouble with any medications? What has changed over the past few months?

Waterspotting and Dotticure Nail Art: The Fire Doesn’t Always Burn Gold

The last couple of days left me totally uninspired. Nothing in particular except for that time I shoveled snow and busted my spine…and that other time I had to lift my mastiff out of the car because she knew she was at the vets and dug her legs into every open crevice around the seat.

I could hear my doctor’s voice in the back of my head, and I could see his expression floating in front of my eyes but, I had to do what I had to do; even if it made me feel awful later.

Anyways…

Months ago Glam Polish released a limited edition Lord of the Rings collection of polishes. I did not delay in purchasing it…it sold out within days so I consider myself the lucky few who managed to grab the entire collection. I was so excited when I received the collection and meant to post swatches. Instead, I couldn’t bring myself to use them and placed them on my Lord of the Rings shelf (I did not just admit that to the entire interwebs)!

I finally used them and I can’t believe I waited so long. The holographic shimmer in these are amazing! As you all know, I do not generally post swatches but I decided to give it a try. The picture below was taken in fluorescent lighting. It really picked out the silver sparkle.

Glisten & Glow – HK Girl Fast Drying Topcoat

glam polish fires of mordorI tried to capture the polish in incandescent light as it showed the gold shimmer but I couldn’t get my camera to behave.

I can’t get over this polish and can’t wait to incorporate the other colors into nail art! The consistency was great. It was a little thick but in the good, unmoving, doesn’t pool kind of way!

Also, let me gush on how wonderfully this silver water-spotted. It reacted beautifully with the hairspray. It’s my favorite stamping polish and now it’s my favorite water polish too (Shhh, let’s not talk about cleanup)!

Waterspotting and Distressed Nail Art | The Rite of AgingI used 2 coats of Glam Polish Fires of Mordor as my base.

I dotted with Color Club Mrs. Robinson and Pucci-licious.

I water-spotted with Essie No Place Like Chrome.
